Working on some new kennels.....Will be built under a barn that is open on 3 sides......Probaly going to go w/ chain-link units.....I have a 20' width to work with.....concrete floors is the plan.....4 kennels at 5' X 10' big enough in your opinion? Dogs will be taken out 5-6 days a week.....1 dog per kennel......whacha think? ....do I need to go larger......my other kennels were 10'X20' outdoors but seemed like a lot of wasted space. OPINIONS PLEASE

I think 5x10 is good. That is my plans as well when I am able to build some new ones.

I have 12x12 and 10x10, two dogs per.
If I had the resources, I would build mine at least 10x15 on concrete, with 2x4 welded wire, as the animal rights people seem to be pushing for 150sq ft min. In case the legislation ever passes, you would already be in compliance.

Chris, You make a very good point. 10x15 would be legal if that laws ever passes. (which I hope it doesnt) My plans are for a slab that is 50 x 10-so 500sq ft total. If the 150 per dog is passed then I would need a slab that is 80 x 15- 1200sq ft. Big difference n price for sure.

Wonder if previously built structures would be "grandfathered in".......Out of all the kit kennel systems you can buy at places like TSC, not one meets the 150 sqft deal....maybe why it wasn't passed.....

I am not sure why it did not pass, nor do I understand why 150 sq ft seems to be the number thrown around. If it ever does pass, I will be 6 sq ft shy on my 12x12 kennels. I will probably just attach a 2x3 "run" on the back of each one to meet the minimum.
I really like the 10x10 priefert and Behlen kennels. I have one sitting on a slab, with an R-panel roof. Breezy with plenty of shade. I have had some chainlink in the past, but it has not held up as well. Seems some of the dogs can pull the chain link loose from the tubing and escape.

Something I've been considering when thinking about my kennel plans is building doors on the interior walls between the kennels that will remained closed and locked at all times. If the law does pass I can chain the door open between kennels and my sq will double making me legal. For example, I have a bunch of 10x10 kennels. If I chain the door open that is on the dividing wall my sq footage jumps from 100 feet to 200 feet and well within the new requirements. Now that may create some other issues but you get my point.

I have two different kennel setups, one at my house and one at a seperate property. The one at my house is a on a slab with a r-panel roof. It is four priefert kennels that are 10x10 and I like them and they look good and I have a big yard to turn them out in so the dogs get a good bit of exercise. The kennels in the woods are built from a 8'x40' slab. There are 5 kennels covered in r-panel each is 8'x24' with a 8'x8' concrete area and 8'x16' dirt. The dogs seem to really prefer the larger kennels with the dirt. The dogs I have on all concrete just don't seem to move around as well and seem a little stove up to be honest with you. When I finally move and have all my dogs in one place I will have 10 kennels with a slab that is 30x50 with a gable roof and open all the way around. 5 kennels on each side that will be 10x20 half concrete and half dirt. I will still use the priefert kennels on the concrete but will use pipe and 2x4 panel for the fence in the dirt area. I actually have it all drawn up and ready to go....just need to move and find about 10K to make it happen :'( MG

I have a big turnout, and 5 kennels that are 5' x 16' - one dog per kennel... It seems to work ok for me.

Cody, your dogs are twice the size of most peoples dogs, needing more space to stretch out to run. The need to have the room to be active. I have only one kennel that is 5X10 now and about 60 lbs dog in it, I do not feel the space is adequate even when allowing the dog to get out and run once a day.
I know we have been in drought conditions for 2 years, but when it does get wet and nasty again your dogs will be walking in their own crap and when they jump up on side of kennel it will sling crap on whoever s standing near. Most of the dogs learn to crap at the back and still have room to play and wrestle with each other in my 10X20 kennels
Why don't you make the kennels 5X20's instead?
