Anybody ever do this? My coyote bait pet rabbit died yesterday I'm assuming of old age. Now that I don't have a pet rabbit, I was thinking about breeding a meat rabbit doe. The offspring could either be sold to the feed store or placed in my freezer.

Is home grown rabbit worth the trouble, or should I just get some fancy schmancy breed and sell the young to the feed store?

Cheers

I raised rabbits for about 14 months when I was younger.  There is no money in it.  Go to a snake food breeder, and buy what you want from them.  It will save you some money.

I keep a couple rabbits anyway. They are my fertilizer makers for my garden. Best fertilizer there is. I just like for my critters to be able to make enough money to pay for themselves. At that point, I'm money ahead. The feed store has offered to buy all the bunnies I can get them. Just didn't know if meat rabbits are worth messing with or if I should get some tiny toy or lop breed for pets. I think I like to eat rabbits.

Good eating. Good fertilizer and make for great worm beds underneath pens.

Those Lion headed things seem to be very popular! I had a couple of Rex rabbits when I was young, and they feel good to touch.

You had better keep that hush hush.  If the government finds out you are growing your own rabbits they will have them outlawed until they figure out how to tax them or make you buy a permit to be a licensed rabbit breeder and pay to keep intact rabbits. Undecided

That's the great thing about pen-raised rabbits, they're four hunks of white meat and no little drumsticks of nothing but dark meat!!!!
