You can breed any to breeds together but if the parents are not any good/ or produce good hunting dogs you won't have anything

I got a Redtick hound an love him , but who knows if he would produce good dogs

If you got to top notch hog dogs breed them an see what happens but just because its a certain breed don't mean jack crap

Man i wish it was that easy but it just flat out ain't!

There are literally a ton of variables you must consider when speaking of a cross......

I just recently sold a pretty good gyp that was redtick/cur cross. I breed her to a damn good kemmer curr and only ended up with one pup makeing it out of 6. The little female has the markings of the redtick but the body of the bigger kemmers you see. She is only 3 months now so I can say if the match was a hit although I have seen promising signs. When and if you do breed I'd be interested in pup.

The worst dog I've ever seen was a redtick/bmc cross, there, now the two claims cancel each other out.  Wink

Most often your gonna get dogs that are less than the dogs your breeding. Even among whoooowee badass 10 hog per day dogs, most of the litter will not be as good as the parents. I say unless that dog AND bitch gives you an instant stiffy very time you see them them hunt then there's ZERO reson to breed them. If they are that good, find somebody who catches the crap out of hogs and has Reputation as having a WHOLE YARD FULL OF BADASSES, and go hunt with their dogs a few times, if your two dogs still float your boat after all that then go for it.

I don't get people saying run stoppers , after the hog sees dog an runs there is not many dogs that can ran as fast or fast enough to catch back up to put teeth on the hog till it stops again an lets the dog catch up

That's what I'm saying ...... How does your dog stop the hog ?? I haven't seen very many dogs that can keep up with a hog that wants to run in the woods, creeks, an briars ,

Not downing your dogs just simply asking what makes them a run stopper verses the hog stoping an gettin bayed ?

I know there are people that feel differently but I believe ANY hog can be stopped. There are certain things that have to fall into place though....a couple of key factors if you will.

First and foremost....the number one factor is  terrain. Terrain will dictate whether its gonna happen or not. If its a real bad runner in thick jungle briars, lol...well...its probably not gonna happen...the dogs just dont have the room to work the hog like he needs to be worked. You just gotta hope he feels secure in that spot and stays there, which...by definition...a bad runner wont, lol. Now.....take the same hog and let him get caught out in the fields or wooded bottoms or mesquite pastures where its relatively open and that hog CAN be stopped.

The second factor is the dog. Im not talkin about catchy dogs either. Im talkin about a couple or three dogs that lay teeth and back out or circle...lay teeth and back out or circle. Not getting so far out that he cant get back in as soon as the hog spins at another dog and do it again. Im talkin about dogs that KNOW how to work a hog. They just spin that hog like a top. Its a sight to see....I've seen a bad hog SITTING on his nuts and spinning in circles. It was great!

The dogs I'm specifically referencing aren't even around anymore and i asked the guy about the blood and he said he didn't really realize what he had at the time. Again....these dogs weren't Kamikaze rough but stayed tight on hogs even in thick brush. Of course this caused some wrecks but there weren't many hogs that got away. Unfortunately he bred the tightness out of them and now he wishes he hadn't. I think you can find these kind of dogs still but they are few and far between.

For those of us that Hunt strike and bay dogs It's a fine line to walk. I personally am working towards something in between a RCD and a typical bay dog. How tight is to tight? That's the question I guess.

my only advise is to pair the two up.  Such as traits you like and desire in dog.  If both have similar traits and if both have what you like in a dog then you have a pretty good chance of producing what you want.  You got to watch those bad traits too. Shyness, timidness, bad feet , weak mouth, weak nose are some examples I watch for. No guarantee you'll get world beaters, but it's a start.  You'll never know what you'll have until you make the cross.

good luck....

Kevin so you saying you got a dog that can run fast enough to catch a 160 pound hog in open woods before he gets to the thick stuff because we all know that's where they heading

I guess my dogs are just slow then , I only got 2 dogs I know for sure a hog won't out run in the open , my gyp greyhound an my stag ,

They only way I see a dog stopping a hog that wants to run is has to be fast enough to catch up to him an be all catch no bark an have to be able to hold hog an not get drug off
Other than that you can call them run stoppers but
I'm not goin for it the believe the hog decides if he wanna stop or not , same with open dogs , had them not go 50 yards an bay an had some go miles all up to the hog

Never said I had the dogs. (Im working towards what i hope will suit me) But when I first started I saw a few like I described.

I think it was probably a little bit of both...the right dogs and the right hogs but very...very few got away.

I've heard the stories of hogs running with a dog attached to nutts and I believe them considering who they came from. (I sure don't want to get on those hogs!) I'm just saying...the few times ive been in a position to see a hog break and a dog stretch a sack out that hog has STOPPED.

I personally don't care who believes me and who doesn't. I just know what I've seen and that's what I want outa my yard. Maybe someday ill get it.

Also...just so were clear...I'm more talkin about a hog that is bayed initially then decides to try a break.
Open woods or not...2 dogs get on him (an actual bay) and i want him shut down and the right BAY dogs can do that.
Now.....If your talkin about a hog that just takes off at a dead run before the dogs are even in sight...heck...I don't see ANY dog stopping that hog.

I think my favorite dog trade sells pitch is " will stop a runner" , and then later in the SAME post " has a ton of bottom" ....  Grin

That dog should be named Starburst cause he's a contradiction...
