Really excited to get my second ( and maybe 3rd) plott hounds tomorrow! Making a trek from okc all the way to Fredricksburg, Tx to get a plott from Joe Burkett. We are also going to look at a 14 mo old started dog when we get there.

Very excited as I already have one Joe Burkett plott and he'll sure enough sink some teeth in a hog! Can't wait!

Great, all i run is Plotts and i love them. The late great Orval Roberts took me under his wing. Mike Caully and tn. Hillbilly have taught me a lot about the plotts

Good luck with the dog from Mr. Burkett.  I have 7 plotts right now that I am hunting.  Over the years I guess I have had 20 of them.  I've had two from Mr Burkett and both are very nice plot males.  One was average to plus on the grit and the one I still have is just average to low on grit.  But they both can trail a hog and stay with a runner for a long, long time.  All the dogs I've seen from Mr Burkett are tall and have a nice lean build to them.  Good luck and keep us posted.

Who said they did not exist. Like any other breed, you have certain strains that are gritty, some have good noses, some fast & whatever. the secret is to find out which dogs work for you & to find dogs that have a good balance of all those traits.
Plotts, like any other breed have a lot of culls. Depends on where you get them.

Well we went down and met Dr. Burkett for the first time this weekend. I'll say this, if any plott guy hasn't met him you need to take a trip down there to meet him. He was very hospitable. He took us down and we talked plotts and hunting for hours. The man is sure passionate about his dogs and hunting. He is also as knowledgeable about dogs as anyone I've ever heard speak. And man does he have some impressive dogs!! Here is a Joe Burkett hog dog we bought from Justin Howell

That dog looks just like the two dogs I've had from Mr. Burkett (except one was a red brindle).

The black dog in his original post is pretty silent. He's open if he sees the pig but he usually gets em stopped quick and goes straight to baying. The brindle dog in his second post is open. The majority of his dogs are open I imagine. We plan on breeding that black male to another mostly silent plott if we can find one that's nasty on a pig just like him. (I'm jpuckett's brother)

How old is the black dog in the original post?  Sorry if the ages was posted and I just missed it.  Has the dog been silent his entire hunting life and has the dog been raised with other silent dogs or other open hounds?

He's three. But he's only been a hog dog for a year and a half or so. They started him on coon originally, if I remember correctly and he was silent on track so they sold him to our buddy who started him on hogs. Silent since they first started him on coons as far as I know.
