I got a four month old bmc pup. Looking for some advice on how to start him I've just started taking him too the woods just to explore. When should I show him a pig and how should i go about it?

Every one has there own little methods most work exposure and confidence is most important use a small pig and if you have any other dog that will bark at the pig with the pup it will help him good luck fella

Show him now if you think he is ready, make sure each time you show him you set him up for success. We just showed 2 4mth old bmc's their first hog the other day, i brought our crazy little jack russell gyp with em because both pups were raised close to her and she's a gamey little thing. we let em find/run to the pen and didn't do any unneccessary handling, we wanted em to be having fun when they found the hog and they were. Both pups fired off almost immediately once they saw our jr baying.
i think a big BIG part of starting pups or any young dog for that matter is making sure that the dog is confident and comfortable with its surroundings. If a dog is nervous or out of its element (for any number of reasons, strange dogs barking/new places/commotion) before ever seeing the hog then you may as well start over another day, you want that dog excited and comfortable in its surroundings when you plan on working it. I have seen it time and time again and i have been guilty of it in the past. Watch your pup and how he acts around your yard, you will know when he's ready to see a hog.

Training dogs is not about quantity, it's more about timing, the right situations, and proper guidance...After that it's up to the dog... A hunting dog is born not made...
