What is the reason that some catahoulas have rear dew claws and even double dew claws on the rear legs? Just curious my buddy picked up a cat the other day with a dew claw on both hind legs and one leg had two of them.

i cant remeber the reason right now.. i have had some that one puppy will have none and others Double..
i Cut all of mine off at birth! and they can be removed later.. i have seen them catch a dew claw and it was not Pretty...

I've noticed that dew claws are common on cats, but the double dew claws are usually (not always) present with inbreeding.

My Dad always told me the dogs with doubole dew claws made the best dogs. Don't know if it means anything could be one of those old tales. But I always keep the pups with dew claws on the back.

I never have them removed and in 25 yrs of breeding them , i have never had a problem, i know others have

I have a gyp with double dew claws. The vet offered to send me a quote for removal because I was concerned about them getting hung up. $800. and some change!!!  Unless you get them removed as a pup under 6 weeks it is considered an amputation and will cost you big time. |

Had a mountain curr/walker once that had them. He ended up breaking boath. They just kind of flopped around on his back feet, didnt seem to worry him but made my skin crawl. LOL

have 2 dew claws on back leg. I have saw them with double on 1 leg and on both legs. Saw more with just 1 dew claw on back legs. I have 2 dogs now with dew claws on back legs.

This is what I consider double dew claws.  By the time I got around to asking a vet about their removal she was several months old and the price for their removal was and still is ridiculous! |

Dew claws can be removed very easily with an elastrator (the rubber bands used for castration and docking of sheep, cattle and goats) works sllick as anything. Be sure and give a tetanus antitoxin shot when you do it. Why pay a vet to do it when you can do it yourself for around $5 including the price of the tetanus shot.
