I didnt want to hi-jack the bloodline thread.

The mroe I think about it the more it makes sense. People ruin more dogs then they think. Just like in anything else, the training period is the mot important part of what we do. People always say to run your young dog with an adult dog(adult dog that hunts the way you want you pup to hunt). That isnt always possible. If the hunt in the dog is there then the having the adult there will help form its style in a way. I dont hae an adult dog that hunts the way I want right now. What do I do? I hunt them. Sure I hunt with some guys from time to time but most of the time I hunt my dogs alone. That is prolly hurting me ore then anything.
I am going to use a friend as an example- We have talked about this many times. His dogs hunt. Anywhere from 800yds plus. When they come back to the truck, he will get them to loop back out. They will hunt further out on the second loop. I am impressed by these dogs. I am pretty sure that if I hunted my young pups with those dogs day in and day out, they would turn out to be good dogs.

I maybe totally wrong, but from what I have seen and talked to alot of people about, alot of good dogs have prolly been ruined due to you (and definatly me) having our heads stuck up our ass es.

Sometimes all you can do is try, you cant always have the perfect conditions and perfect dogs to hunt with.

One of the reasons I hate raising pup...so much rides on me making the correct decisions.

That's pretty funny but I just noticed his quote...... That's really funny Smiley

Speaking of puppies and 20lb dogs, are there pups on the way?

I'll agree.

Training (in my opinion) should consist of taking what should be a genetically charged dog and allowing the breeding to shine all the while doing everything possible not to screw it up in the process.

Dogs were proficient hunters long before they were domesticated.  They didn't need a human hand then, and I believe the best ones don't need a human hand now.  My job is simply to provide the opportunity.  Nothing more, nothing less.

Some of the best dogs I've ever hunted behind were never run with older dogs.  Started alone as a pack of pups and figured it out themselves.  The guy would take them to the woods and turn hogs loose for them to go find over a period of time getting farther and farther away.  Not once or twice, but several times a week and probably over a years time.  What he ended up with is a pack (that in my opinion) he can be extremely proud of.

It's my opinion that there are a lot of good dogs ruined by bad training. I can't tell you the mistakes I've made over the years. Just when I think I know a little bit someone tells or shows me a better way. Always open to new ideas.
