Theres a lot of difference between a woods dog and a pen dog.... had a black cur dog yrs back that wouldn't hardly bark at a hog in a pen,, tried him the day I bought him from a feller.  He was a straight catch dog when the hog was under 200 and was cut up from can to cant.  He just didn't like the pen environment I guess, but he sure was a hog dog...

sometimes it has to do with the dog getting overworked in a pen and he learns that the hog is not going to be caught so the dog catches on and he will not work in the pen...put the same dog in the woods and he knows hogs are to be caught and so he will hunt and bay...that is how I interpret what I have seen...

I keep hogs in a pen in my yard also my wife and kids have pet pigs my dogs know when I let them out not to fool with them. Now if I put them in a pen and tell them to catch em they will.

My buddy has a jam up gyp that's hell on a hog in the woods but won't even bark at one in a pen.She wasn't trained in a pen she was trained in the woods and I believe that she considers one in a pen a caught hog and she don't fool with a caught hog.

some dogs don't need to develop a relationship...but some do...for me I would want to have the dog trust me as his master before most anything else...
