I have a BT pup, the runt of course, come down with a respiratory infection that got worse by the day, turned pneumonia. Got him on Ampicillin orally, guifenesin (same ingredient as Mucinex), and a shot of Pen-BP. This baby is pretty darn little and not many places to stick him. He feels like a pin-cushion right about now. I have heard of people with compromised immune systems and chronic sinusitis having an antibiotic delivered through the nebulizer, in addition to the traditional routes. Seems logical to send an antibiotic to the source of the infection as well as in the blood stream to maximize the defense. I've seen the suggestion here (somewhere) to use equal parts Pen and iodine as a topical solution to fight infection in a cut. I'm thinking as long as it is water based and broken up into tiny particles, the Pen would be absorbed by the lungs? I drew up 3cc's Sterile saline solution in a 5cc syringe, then only about 1/8 cc of the Pen, shook it up and put it in the nebulizer cup. I've done this once a day, the other treatements were just sterile saline to moisten and break up the mucous. Today, he's showing improvement. Might just be the other regimen finally kicking in, but I would like to hear some thoughts if anyone knows about using an antibiotic in the Nebulizer for respiratory infections?

I have used one on horses with good results. I took a small trash can with foam rubber aroud the top and put on them like a feed bag, ran flex hose from the nebulizer to ahole in the bottom of the trash can. I used gentimycin as the antibiotic. A small funnel hoked up the same way and placed over the pups face might work good.

The older I get, the better I was. If you pick up a starving dog and make him prosperous, he will not bite you. This is the principle difference between a dog and a man. Mark Twain
