Anyone have a dog with the above problem... He has been on infection meds for the last two weeks due to a snake bite and he has been on steroids also. I find it hard to believe that the infection meds wouldn't have cleared up any infection that his body had in it,, So my question is ,, should I just cut him and sacrifice the ability to breed him in the future or what.... kind of sucks cause he is my last parker male dog and I was gonna breed him to my last parker gyp in Sept when she comes in... But at the same time ,, he should have lots of hunt left in him since he is only 6 yrs old...Don't want to take a chance that it is cancer and it transfer to another part of his body and kill him... Before I run him to vet today,, wanted to get some other opinions...

Training dogs is not about quantity, it's more about timing, the right situations, and proper guidance...After that it's up to the dog... A hunting dog is born not made...

Swollen testicles are a symptom of swine brucellosis. Low dose doxycycline for 60 days cured a dog of mine that had it and he remained fertile. A blood test is needed to confirm it.

Bigo,,,,, he was given doxy last week as a new infection med for the snake bite,, due to his white blood cell count being high,,,, but after giving him the meds for a week and him getting better I didn't finish the whole prescription ,,, funny u mentioned swine brucellosis,,, because my wife and I was talkin bout this yesterday... What kind of blood test narrows down this cause the vet Im dealing with now,, is too use to dealing with lap dogs and she prob wont even know what this is.. thanks again,,

That's a sure sign of brucellosis... I've had 4 come down with it over the years. Two pulled thru, one I had to get cut and one died... but he was an older dog.

Mike,, the test to tell for sure is 150 bucks ,, the vet says it will be accurate... If it is that,, can the dog be bred again or if it is that just go head and castrate him ... This is the first I have had this problem in my hog hunting career and you would know it would have to happen to the last parker male I got... What meds besides doxycycline can I give him cause he has been on that for the last week and it didn't stop him from getting it so I don't know if itll help him get rid of it .. if it is brucellosis....

Yes, he can breed just fine if you can get it cleared up. My vet used tetracycline to treat my dogs.

It's not contagious from one dog to another like the brucellosis they get from cows. The medication needs to be given at least 30 days but 45 to 60 is better. The dog I had produced several litters after he had it and the females were fine afterwards.

Bigo,,, the last boar hog this dog was on was in a creek in a cow pasture,,,,, it was about 3 weeks ago... Now,, the dog has not been around cows particularly but was bayed on this one with about 20 head of cows standing by the bank of the creek. but other than this incident he has not been by any cows at all... Surely he didn't catch it from em just that one time.... Now ,, its got me wondering ,,,, Kinda got me thinking I need to tell the vet to run that blood test on him so we can identify if or what kind of brucellosis it is ,,, I don't like to see a situation where I cant fix it quick but I sure hate to take his breeding away from him if it can be helped ... thanks

It doesn't take but one time to contract something, he wouldn't have gotten it directly from the cattle themselves but from the environment that it's present in from the cows excrement and bodily fluids, I'm with Bigo on this one?
