Hog Dogging Terms/Phrases
«
on:
February 14, 2018, 06:53:23 am »
I have seen the term "strike out of the box" used on here and other sites, but I've never heard it used in the circle of hog hunters that I talk to.....Does it mean that the dog is winding while it is still in the box or on the atv/utv/boat/truck?
Are the terms "Find Dog" and "Strike Dog" the same?
I did try to search this topic before I posted but I did not find one, I did find plenty of opinions on the term "Help Dog".....

Strike out of the box is most often called "Rigging" the dog winds an animal or a track from a vehicle of some kind. To me dogs that don't open on track are "find dogs", "strike dogs" open when they smell a track, and open or silent on track they are both bayed when they bay. But then I don't eat lunch and dinner is the noon meal, and supper is in the evening as well haha.

Good point there Clue. Never thought about Jesus last dinner. I would also agree with your terminology concerning the use of the words striking and rig strike.

Yes that is when they wind a track from the box or vehicle or whatever, most commonly called rigging as someone has already explained.

To me and the people I hunt with Strike dog means a dog that can find and start his own track, and find dog is a more general term for that but could also mean pretty much any type of dog that will try to find game or that's purpose is to find game. With us a strike dog could be open or silent as long as it is finding and starting its own track (striking its own track). I hope that helps.

When I hear the term "strike dog" I automatically assume the dog is open trailing, straight or at least well bent, and probably cold nosed as well thus earning the title strike dog or start dog that you can safely feed dogs in to with confidence in that track. If I hear rig dog I expect the same as above dog but he consistently does it from the rig. I admit to being a dinosaur, and was raised around old time dog men of hound and Cur variety. but they never had a silent trailing Cur strike dog he was a find dog, they didn't have tracking systems and if he didn't open he hadn't "struck", if they saw one leave trailing he had hit a track and he found'em over yonder. Still today in the "hound" world a dog can't be struck if he hasn't opened. It seems to be a generational and or cultural "gap" that can be worked around with a question or two.

Try this page, it has common usage deffinitions. But as with various location in the US that speak english, termanology of phrases/words can varry a little or a LOT and so can hunting, phrases/words varry with location and type of game being hunted and the means of hunting the game.

A find dog is a cow or hog dog that can find in front of, behind, or to the side of the other dogs and is a title that should be earned. If they can't do that, they are just a hog dog.

Where I'm from, a few of us would always hunt together, no more than 3 cow bred cur dogs on the ground at any given time. We would all bring a dog , sometimes two, and switch them out on the bed or deck during a hunt. You were expected to have a "hog" dog. This was a dog that could wind, find, stop, and attempt to hold a hog on it's own. To us, any thing else was just a dog. I don't care if a dog could strike, wind, trail, find 100 head in a day, if it could not stop and anchor them, it was not worth a piss to us. Just a regional thing I reckon.

Your last sentence says a mouth full, a lot of folks can't grasp the fact that hogs are extremely adaptable to their surroundings, and it takes different styles of dogs to excel in different geographical regions, and they are as different as people when it comes to different types of animals in different areas even within relatively close distances, terminology in regards to labeling hog dogs seems to be the biggest source of foot stomping and chest beating within this sport, by no means am I saying that about this post or anyone on here mainly public social media...

Who needs an anchor to strike and keep a hog bayed/ in 1 spot? The anchor walks to the bay with me on a leash... A strike dog is obviously a dog that will find and bay a pig, being open has nothing to do with it and usually is frowned up on in my hunting circles. Every strike dog ive had would rig, thats what dogs do that smell pigs imo. Find dog should mean the same thing ...

Like I said, a dog that will not wind, find, stop, and then attempt to anchor stock is just a dog to us, and not a "cur dog". To me, a cur dog is a stock dog, cattle and hogs, and should be able to perform all of those tasks. Also, I do not go to the woods or pasture to walk dogs on a lead. A dog without a handle is a cull, period!
This is just our opinion though

Folks who like that style of dog that's who, different strokes for different folks, there isn't a set standard of what a hog dog is, as long as it can do the type of job it's asked to do...
