Went out to a spot I’ve been running the dogs in this morning, everyone is at work except me and the terriers. I get down to where I planned on hunting and there’s some folks running beagles after rabbits. Had a nice conversation and parted ways. We hit the woods in some of the most likely terrain and didn’t get anything going.
I decide to switch to the hopscotch mode and check spots as I move about the property. First spot was only 1/4 mile from where I was initially but it made all the difference in the world. I walk into the woods a short way and my male and this heideterrier of mine light out of there. About a minute goes by and I hear him barking, I’m concerned about him trashing so I look at the garmin and they’re about 350 and not moving, my female jagd was in a different area but not far. I start thinking they might actually have something bayed up, they’re barking and not catching so I think it might be a good one too.
I get to the scene of the crime and there’s a big hog in a ditch and all three of my mutts are giving her the business. This is their first hog they stopped on their own without being in the company of other dogs, so I’m pretty pleased at this point. Mind you I don’t have a catch dog, when the hog sees me it starts making a move in my direction, what she didn’t see was the Kimber 10mm in my hand. I double tapped her and she goes out of the ditch towards the dogs.
She’s fighting them a bit and staggering, I give her another one and roll her over. After a bit she decides she’s got some more life in her, I grabbed her by the tail and used the sticker to end it. They got after another one that ran about 650 and I thought they had it stopped. I start their way and the race is on again, it took me a while to get all the dogs collected up. It turned out to be a big sow missing her left ear and one teet (no idea how that happened). I had a hard time moving her so I guessed her about 180/200, I don’t like to inflate numbers but she was thick.
