Left out early this morning with intentions of making a short hunt to check out a pack of dogs I bought off a guy that was selling out this past week.  I dropped the dogs out and they took off for the woods.  About half an hour later, we had moved down and stopped to listen for a while.  We had been sitting about 5 minutes when we heard the strike a good ways in the brush.  Unloaded catch dogs and made our way there.  At the end, was this big mean boar.  He worked over two dogs pretty good, but I think they'll be okay.  Loaded up and headed back home by 9:30.  Very seldom does a hunt go just as planned!

The dog in the picture is one of the ones I picked up.  A full blood registered black and tan that is completely silent on trail.  I've never hunted around a full hound that was quiet.  One thing about them, there's no mistaken when they're on the bay!

Thanks guys.  The little 1 1/2 yr. old dog of my buddies lost the battle yesterday afternoon.  R.I.P. Scrap.  He was the last of a litter they raised by hand because the momma dog died a few days after having the pups.  They bottle fed those pups from three days old on, and so they had a little more of a special bond.  He was a fighter!

Jason-  Yes my boy was able to make the bay.  There was a field we had to cross with a bunch of cactus so he got to ride on my shoulders most of the way!  We waited a little ways back for the catch and then got close enough to see, but still stayed back until the other guys got him flipped and started tying.  I noticed the cut dog right away and pulled him out to begin tending to him.  My boy got a little upset and so another guy took him and headed back to the four wheelers.  He's been in the woods hunting long enough to know the deal, but he's still six.  Heck, I don't like hurt dogs either.

Mr. Mason-  My wife about had a come-apart when I mentioned earlier in the week that I was buying more dogs  Angry  I had heard of these, and rumor had it they were supposed to be good ones...I just couldn't help myself!

Sorry to hear about the dogs. I know that one was special since he had hand raised him.

Scott,

I have no idea about the bloodline.  I just picked this one up last week.  He was neutered when young so with no chance to breed, I wasn't too concerned with reminding the guy to find the papers for me when I went out there.  I can however call and find out.  By breed standards. I would say being silent on a trail would definately be considered a cull.  By hog dog standards, I call him a rare find.  I haven't worked him enough to get a good feel but according to the previous owner, he also hunts more heads-up cur style.  I don't know much about straight hounds, but in my eyes he a slicked out good lookin' fella.  I'm going again tomorrow afternoon to see what these two will show me.

Here's a couple more pics I took Friday.

As far as the "buggy" as we call them...that one belongs to one of my hunting partners.  Here's a couple pics of the one I built by taking his design and tweaking it just a bit.  By axle length do you mean width, or distance from the tongue or what?  When I first built it, the axle set back further.  Worked fine on my old straight axle four wheeler.  When I bought the independant suspension Polaris, I had to cut the axle off and move it forward to reduce the tongue weight.  It bottomed my springs out.  I found a formula on the internet to calculate the placement of your axle based on trailer legth, tongue weight, and overall weight.  If thats what your interested in, I'll send you the link.  The picture below is before I moved the axle forward...you can see how much it squatted that wheeler.

I'd have to measure it.  I can't remember the width, I just know I bought the shortest axle they had and then narrowed it by cutting out a section with a bandsaw.  The basic trailer I started out with was a flat bottom trailer that was laying around.  It would have been cheaper to start completely from scratch.  Everything on it has been replaced.  The original axle (actually it was a piece of 1 1/2" channel) broke the first time in the woods.

If you get tired of that no barking hound send him to me. Grin

Realdogs a silent hound is not a cull. In competition coon hunts and such it is not the most desirable trait but deffinately not a cull.  I know of one silent competition dog whos owner had enough money to buy a new truck laid on the hood of his truck for the dog, he declined and took his dig home. Said the dog had already made him more than that. A lot of bear bred plotts are silent also.

Bryant. what the heck man u get all the luck Grin. A silent hound is like have a wife that wants you to bring home some hog meat for her so she can cook it for you when you get home from a hard day of hunting Grin. Well i have one of those but it aint the hound and i would consider trading Grin

Note to wife(J/K if you are reading)

Note to Bryan( for real call me and lets work out something) Grin

Good looking dog and good hog to. I hope to make it down there one of these days and do a little hunting. We should be going perty quick to get the deer lease going again maybe we can hook up.
