Well as some of you know my dan dog had his lower jaw broke off about a month ago,it is wired up and he is healing good. While i was in Australia my dad gave me a couple of his racing greyhound muzzles, they are super lightweight and allow a dog to breath/scent well and bark as it only sits under the lower jaw.I am going to try it on dan when he is ready to hunt and hopefully it stops him from catching and re-breaking it.Here are a couple of pics, has anybody ever hunted one with a muzzle? Just curious.

My JJ female broke her jaw about 18 months ago, trying to catch a hog with no ears. I have never had a dog break their jaw before, thought it was a freak thing. Since then I have heard of several dogs breaking their jaws while hog hunting.

I have never used a muzzle, I don't know if I would. I just think the dog may run in to catch and not be able to. At that point he is close enough to be wrecked....

Let us know if it works out.

I had a bulldog break his jaw. About 2 months after the wire came off I put him right back to catching. Never gave him any problems. Im not a doctor so I dont know but alot of people told me it would be stronger after it fused back together.

Sounds like it is more likely to get your dog hurt. It wont know it cant catch until it is too close to the hog.

the bone will be repaired and the fracture will be filled in and the bone built up around the crack. The bone will actually be thicker (stronger) around the original break. If it breaks again it will be in a different location.

Only way to break in the same spot is to hunt it too soon before it is fully healed.

Jimmy,

I would think about this:  If he was baying a hog tight and the hog took a swipe at him, what would happen if a tusk caught up in those wires?  It might scalp him - maybe not but just a thought.  Or he could possibly hang up in fence.

Take care man.

i'm definately no expert but if he cant bite how is he going to put the brakes on a runner or get any hog shut down for that matter?

I have bought muzzles from the National Greyhound Assoc. (NGA) to break catchy dogs and work dogs in the pen on smaller hogs.

The muzzles they sell are like those in photo but have heavier wire and a large clear, soft vinyl bridge over the nose.

Recently, I could not find the NGA muzzles so had some custom made from Morrco  in Louisiana.

http://www.morrco.com/wirbasdogmuz.html

I have saved a few catchy dogs from an early death with muzzles.  Never had a bad experience in the field to date, but it is possible.  I know others that used muzzles and not heard of any wrecks there.  If another dog attacks your muzzlesd dog, that dog could break teeth on muzzle....

I don't know about the jaw being stronger after it heals. My vet said don't hunt the dog as the chances are good she will re-break her jaw and if she does, he can't fix it again.

I also know a guy that had a dog get a broken jaw, he had it fixed, laid her up for a year for it to heal and she re-broke her jaw on her second hunt after having a year off.

So I am not going to hunt mine. I may want a litter out of her so she can just hang around the house for now.....

Goatcher, thanks for the info bud.Thats what i was looking for,not just guessing games as to what might or can happen but some in the field tried and tested KNOWLEDGE.Anything can happen in hog hunting and i am prepared to take the inherant risks that go with it,on top of that i know my dogs better than i know my wife so i am going to try him with the muzzle. The muzzles on the link look good also, thanks again, jimmy.
