I think the guy you are talking about is Joe Stiles.  I haven't had the pleasure of meeting him but those who i have talked to about him said he always had some good dogs.  Dont know if he is still out on the ranch but he lives south of town in Riviera.  Theres a guy on the board here named RUSS who works out there he might could tell you more.

This has been quite a few years ago but I trained bird dogs on the King Ranch and helped quide quail hunts. We went in at the Encino gate and the place was the San Thomas camp.

I did not see anybody down there with catahoulas at that time (1988) but I did see plenty of hogs. They wore our bird dogs out. You cannot believe how many they pointed. I have film somewhere of them running bird dogs back to the truck.

The low places had this big grass called sacaweista (sp) and the hogs would get in it and bed up. Sometimes you did not know if you had a hog or a quail pointed.

It would have been a great place to hunt because all you would have to do is drive from one patch of sacaweista to another and turn out. The camp were were on had 34,000 acres and you could see from here to yonder.
