Alright guys I'm on the other end of the hunt from most of you.  I'm an outfitter and I just got a new pup
(american bulldog/redtick hound.)  I've trained jack russells to track wounded/dead game before but have had zero experience with the new breed I have.  Do any of you guys have suggestions on how to start this dog or do you think I should just do everything the same that I do with the Jacks.  PS the reason I got this little guy was because although the Jacks are go getters, they don't do to well with wounded boars lol.

If you have been successful at training J.R.'s you ought to stick to you game plan with this new dog and be just fine.  You could stick him on a few canned hunts for pigs while blood training, just so he knows which side of a live pig is the dangerous one. But once he's achieved some level of success at trailing and he finds a wounded hog at the end of the blood trail I'm pretty sure bulldog nature will take over and you better get to him quick.

Good luck, happy hunting

Do you think that is a good cross of dogs.  American bulldog/Red Tick Hound.  The RedTick is the momma and she can run a trail like crazy but the bulldog dad is just a goofy dog. lol

It sounds like a really good cross to me. but like T-Bob said, he's probably going to catch a wounded hog

So I take it I should probably get a vest and collar for him to wear when I track?

I'd see what he did first. Try finding a pig to bay him on. If he catches out then I'd definetley try and get a collar and vest for him but if he bays you should be fine

When can I put him in a pen with a pig?  What size should the pig be?  And is there a way I can train him to just bay or do you just let the dog use his instincts and work around him?

how old is the pup?  get a hog thats wont hurt him to start out with, then progress from there. the breed he is, he may be more apt to catch than bay.

This is kinda like predicting whether or not the groundhog will see his shadow but I'd bet balls to a barndoor he's probably going to bay them for the first year or so, you'll think, okay I got a baydog then BAM he'll start catching.

How old is he?
Where are you located?
Good luck with him and lets se some pictures,  ill bet he's a real ladykiller Afro

He's just a few weeks old but I had pick of the litter and he's shoving the others off the tit so I figured he'll be tough. haha.  I'll probably just get him a vest and collar once he's old enough to get after it.  That way if the hog is wounded and he catches him, the hunter will get a good adrenaline rush at least. lol

Pretty sound advice right here.
