Hi folks. I met a lot of you this weekend at the Expo & thought I'd introduce myself on here. I'm the short haired blonde that was running around with the camera, ridgebacks, jagds & kids all weekend (not necessarily in that order though). My husband is Machine73 on here & couldn't make it to the Expo due to being out of town on business. I had a great time this weekend getting to meet a ton of you all & working with the TDHA. Over all it seems like the Hog Doggin community welcomes new folks with open arms. It's been really nice. As soon as I get everything unloaded from my van I'll be emailing those that gave me their contact info to thank them personally for making this a great experience for my kids and I. Kelley,
It was nice meeting you and seeing your dogs this weekend. I was prompted to check out your website, and found myself with a couple of questions...
What is lure coursing? I'm thinking that is what the dogs are doing when they are wearing silks, but how far are they coursing, and what is the lure?
Your dogs are gorgeous. I have seen ridgebacks before, but they looked like labradors - shortish legged, wide barreled, and thick. Nothing like the streamlined and leggy dogs you and your friends had out this weekend. I was impressed with your dogs look hands down.
The other question I have will be asked in pm so you aren't put on the spot in public.

Lure coursing is a game stuck up showdog people play with their foo foo sight hounds. Haha, just sending a jab at my wife. Basically it's just a race for the dogs. They chase a lure (just a plastic bag) around a course. Sort of like greyhound races but instead of an oval the course has turns in it. It's really just a game. But kelley and the dogs have fun doing it and that's really the only thing that matters. Usually dedicated sight hound sprinters win the competitions, but the ridgebacks do well most of the time. They're pretty fast and agile for such big dogs.

Trust me Sean, I hung my head in shame every time I muttered that they were show dogs  Lure coursing is a racing sport for dogs. You have a pulley system, a motor & a whole lot of line with three plastic bags attached to it. It's supposed to be a sighthound sport that proves a dog still has the instinct to chase. Titus (red dog) loves to do it where Lucius (blonde) has no interest. We took Hilde out & did it with her one time too. If it moves she wants to stop it from moving & had a blast at it. For Ridgebacks it's kind of a joke but it does show you the speed they can haul out at in a controlled environment. Like Sean said, it is all just a game. It doesn't prove a dog has instinct to do anything except chase a plastic bag. Thanks for the compliments on the boys! They're pretty - now I'm hoping we can get a little more than just pretty out of them. Mr. Mason & Krystal have been really great & super patient with both them and me since I have no clue what I'm doing. I'm really getting addicted to watching the dogs mentally develop when we've had them out for training. I really enjoyed talking with you all there.  I'll go check my PM now. Kelley |

Welcome Kelley! It was nice meeting you during the genetics talk, I saw you walking the Ridgebacks around after that was very impressed. And it's always nice to see another hog dog photog. Getting nice pictures of our sport does nothing but help our public image. Right after she started hog hunting, I took Sadie to a lure coursing event at Triple Crown on a whim. Surprisingly she did chase the plastic bag through the first couple turns. Then some dogs started barking in the parking lot, excited I-see-prey barking. Sadie hauled a$$ to the "bay" and was very disappointed to find nothing there but two Whippets. Nobody asked me to leave, but they didn't ask me to come back either  |

Julie you are a far better photographer than I am. I've admired your flickr site for a while now. I totally agree that good pictures create a window to this way of life with our dogs. Your Sadie is a cutie. Hutto is where I took Hilde out Lure Coursing last. They had that "fun run" after we ran the Ridgebacks & Hilde had been watching that bag go around all day. We were about eight back from the front of the line when after Hilde yowled & yipped while they were setting up they asked us to go first. I think it was to get her off the field She loved it though. Eric now I can put a name with a face after that comment! Thanks for the warm welcome  |

So far my stories would mainly be me embarrassing myself while out training with the dogs This is really addicting though & I'm loving it. I can't wait to actually get out & go hunt. Thanks! |
