I have a pit bitch that has four and a half week old puppies. I came home last night to find her halfway up the front porch steps, convulsing and shaking uncontrollably, unable to walk or keep her ballance. I called my vet and he told me what to give her, a calcium solution I keep on hand for cows with milk fever. I have been giving her 20 cc oraly every 30 min. since 9:30 last night. She is weak, but not shaking nearly as severely and can stand and eat. I think she's going to make it, but I was wondering if anyone else has had this experience, what you did about it, and what you did to keep it from happening again. Btw, the puppies are pit/?, look like pits now but she's a stray, and no telling what she was bred to. The pups are white, white with spotts, brown, blue, and black. They will be ready to go in a couple of weeks hopefully, as long as their mama makes it. If not it could be sooner. Let me know if you might want one, I'm in Sulphur Springs.

I give my females Pet-Cal cacium supplement one a day from the time they are bred 'till they have the pups, then two or three a day 'till the pups are weaned.

Thanks ya'll, the dog is right as rain now, and I am suplementing with calcium to keep this from happening again. I hate having a sick animal when I could have prevented it from happening. This is the first litter of pups I have ever whelped out of one of my dogs, so I'm learning a lot. At least I know now for next time, (if there is a next time) and I won't forget.
