so, I've been getting begged to buy a horse (for a year now to be exact)..... by my daughter.  it's been quite a few years since i've ridden.  and am not well versed on horse purchasing.  i know what'll work for me but have never had to buy a horse for a youngster.  she'll be 5 in a few more months and is rather tall for her age.  Would you all think it'd be better to buy an older broke pony (no pony experience) or a shorter quarter horse that she could grow into, i was thinking something in the 14 hand range if i got her a quarter horse.   She's been super persistant in this and hasn't lost interest so I think it'd be good for her and be a reason for me to start riding again too.  she's been led around a few times on a arabian her great aunt has but that's about it.

any of you guys/gals have any suggestions?  tips?  gear suggestions (youth saddle?) also i was hoping to get her into riding lessons around here Victoria area (tried asking about this before but never heard anything back).  I am willing to take her whereever she needs to go to have someone reputable that one of you would take your own kids to.

any help would be great.

Find a old wore out ranch horse if you can!!! Try to only buy one horse so it will bond to her (not another horses) They don't need horse friends!!  Spend the money and buy her a Corrente Buckaroo saddle it has help my kids and many others the high back helps hold the kid in!! They run $380!!! Keep leading the horse with her to build cofidence in the child!! Get a round pen and work the horse in the pen before putting the kid on everytime to get the horses mind right each time for a kid!!! You can learn the horse and relase the kid in the round pen then put the horse on the wall and let the kid learn to trot then lope so fourth!!It all takes time and let the kid go slow remember horse are animals and can do something stupid at anytime!!! My kids were born in a saddle and Rowdy is 10 and can ride the hair off one!! But just take it slow find the right horse(never buy color cause its pretty)!!! As far as a pony this is the way I see it a pony can be mean and get away with alot BECAUSE how is a grown man or women going to get on a pony and correct them when needed its hard been there done it!!! I tell Rowdy all the time I'm going to buy unbroke ponys  for him to break cause he will put a hurtin on one!! I do use my kids horse every once and awhile to keep the horse heads right!! (To make sure they don't get sire) If I can be any help let me know!!

know anywhere to pick up that saddle you're talking about?? would NRS or someone like that carry em??  i bought a round pen a little while back from TSC.  I've heard that about ponies but wasn't sure if it was true or not, them being mean and such.  i'll start lookin for an old broke horse.  you think something like 12-15 years old would be old enough??  i mean they should be well broke by then i'd imagine (if they were used a lot per week, i mean).

so here's a question.... is the hard seat with the pencil roll easier to for a kid to ride in or is one of the saddles with the full seat better?? it's hard to tell the seat angle.

i will say my daughter likes the one with the pink seat   go figure....lmao

Mine ride the hard but he builds those saddles to help hold those kids inn!!The pink one should work for her the same way!!! I am a firm beleaver in a good saddle and it should fit your girl good!!Rowdy is 10 and just moved up to the 13" But is is a little skinny worm!!Now my cousin has a little girl that is 6 but she is bigger and he bought her the 13" it fit her fine!!

i just couldn't tell if the pencil roll was taller or not.  it's like an optical illusion to me, just didn't know if it would come up higher behind her seat or not....like more of a safeguard or if they're both the same angle and height just a pencil roll and a cheyenne roll.

i wish i could explain what i'm saying a little clearer.....i don't doubt they both are designed to hold em in, just curious on height.  seems like it would make her feel a little more secure in her seat if one come a little higher behind her.

got any old broke down horses for sale, Chance Grin

Having a pencil roll over a cheyenne roll cantle you will gain about 3/8" to 1/2" height usually over a cheyenne roll.  Not much more, but does add a little height to the cantle.

Do what you want but I wouldn't own a pony, a good kids horse is way better. I start kids and colts out the same way slow and easy. Dont do like my neighbours did and buy a horse without riding it first, they came by to ride i couldn't go with them and 20 mins later one came back screaming down the road, the " broke horse " they bought bucked his girl friend off on the paved road and she died 2 days later from a brain injury. So just becareful and if ya can take a old horse hand with ya to try'em out cause there are lots of sorry people who will sell you a no good horse even when they know it's for a kid..........just my 2 cents though.

I've gor an old grade gelding that my kids have outgrown.  Not size wise but they have graduated to barrel horses.  This hores has been hauled to Colorado and hunted off of, and been to playdays as well.  I'm not trying to push him just thought he might fit the bill.  Now he ain't the prettiest thing in the pasture but he is damn sure broke.  Any questions pm me or call 936-635-5625.  Thanks Kevin
