I want to try out a dog that weighs about 100lbs. It just showed up and won't leave my dad's place so he told me to take it. He said it looks like a pit mix. How big of a pig do I need to test and/or train him. I guess let the dogs start baying and then try the catch dog to see what he does. I am near Magnolia and can setup whatever I need. Or if someone has a setup already let me know. I do not mind a drive of an hour or less. But I would like to know where to start with a dog that is not a puppy. I was told he is big and friendly to people and other dogs.

i would get a hog atleast 100# and throw him on it youll find out quick if he is a cd or not i think a cd is born that way not trained just improved upon if the dog sees the hog and dosent want anything to do with it or bays it will probabally never be a cd if he looks at it and nails it as soon as it makes a noise or movement that is what i want in a cd eyes rolled back in a trance that dog wont let go on you jmo

If the dog doesn't just nail the hog right off the bat or when the other dogs are baying, take control of the hog by the back legs & get the hog to SQEAL. The high pitched squeal combined with you dominating the hog might help if he's a slow starter.

on a new dog we just get a little pig and let it go to town. we dont put it in with a big hog and let it get wooped we wont them to think they are in control and then gradually work your way up towards a big hog

I am going to head up tomorrow and check him out. Friday I will run him by the vet for a look over and rabies shots for all my dogs. Then over to Roughdog to see what he will do. I may be rolling my team out in a few weeks. Then I will just need to get a practice squad for this injury prone sport.

I would just take him to the woods and send him into a bay behind another cd, who knows the size but if the curs wont catch it then it should be big enough to test him. If he doesnt catch then cull, if he does repeat....wont take many hunts to know if you will feed or cull.

My dad always said don't let your alligator mouth overload your hummingbird a$$. I love my BMC she is a rock star but she is only 40lbs. She may have a little growing to do but I would love to have her weigh in near 80lbs. But for real I think a pack of gritty bay could really get'r done. Then the bay can take care of itself. I had my cat and my BMC gyp baying a 40lb hog as I got there the hog charged the cat. The BMC just grabbed the hog by the neck and held it while the cat ran around and grabbed the back leg. When I checked the pig I could not find any blood on the neck! That is when I fell in love with that girl. I just wish she could do that with a bigger hog. If someone has a bigger BMC I would love to have one. I would love a couple males about 80lbs or more each. Then I could run with only one catch dog just in case I run into a 300lb+ hog. I used to have a Rottweiler that could hold a balloon in his mouth without popping it! I really like a well balanced dog that has strength and control.

But give some gritty bays with alligator a$$es and I would be happy as a pig in...

JMO....

I like to start a bulldog out in a controlled atmosphere whether it be in a pen or with a hog tied up in the woods. I know how big the hog's body & teeth are. Its great to just take them hunting, but if that 1st hog you come to is a big bad toothy sucker & your new bulldog gets hurt or killed because he doesn't know what to do, you're right back to looking for a new bulldog when a little homework could have done a lot of good. I've had bulldogs that went from not knowing what a hog is to a solid catchdog with just a few hog experiences.

What I said and your post is exactly the my point, If the curs dont catch then it will be big enough to test the bulldog. So actually I can say that and it makes good sence. Even if its caught it will start the catch dog.

This is actually the best way of doing it but since it was a stray and you havent fed it for a yr etc. i just stated my .02 on how i would start a stray, it would perform fast or eat lead. I would do the above mentioned quote if I raised or really liked the dog. "even if you have gritty curs"  :'(
