I was hunting at Jones Crossing near Lake Proctor this morning and struck a runner (to say the least). I was horse back and had to tie my horse at the Leon River. By the time I caught up with the stike dogs I had walk three miles and swam two rivers and was standing at the edge of the lake and all four dogs were across the lake. I had two 100 lb. catch dogs with me Duce and Jim. We decided we would swim the lake as well (bad judgment call) we waded out and the water became deeper and deeper util it was chest high and the two catch dogs and I were 500 yards from shore. Neither dog could swim very well so I was having to carry them. Finally we made it back to the shore. The srike dogs were bayed on the other side of the lake. I looked at topo map on the Garmin
and could tell that the path the curs had swam was .7 miles across the lake chasing that hog! I did not realize that dogs could swim that far. Has anyone seen dogs swim this far? Thank you for your responses.

heard it was open but have also heard about people that hunt over there horseback weve had some swim that far that took me hour half get over to em aint fun

I've seen mine swim way to far for me and then go round and round out there, I have had to wait for 20 or 30 minutes before they would ever get close enough for me to go to them.

Seen mine swin the Trinty when it's out of the banks and rolling fast get to the other side bay all day then swim back on there own only lost one to the river about 9 years ago!!!

Just depends on the dog. I've got a rat terrior that thinks he's a fish. I'd put him up against any retriver. He loves getting wood ducks and will swim around as long as it takes looking for one. He's been like that since he was a puppy. Just a natural born swimmer.

got one that swam the mississippi river twice before and back. If any of you know how wide that thing is. Had one swimming a big lake one time it was over half mile across and watched gatoers get him and another dog.

Had that happen last night on Lake o' the pines, except i had to go in after them. I didnt know how deep that part of the lake was, and the garmin said they were over 300 yards out in the lake. Luckily, the deepest it got on that part was chest deep on me. This little sow could swim like a fish!! The dogs would catch her, and almost drown themselves so they would let go. Once i finally got close to them, one of my yella dogs climbed on her back and held her long enough for me to grab her tail and stick her. Not sure how long it took, but it seemed like they were swimming every bit of 30 minutes fightin that hog. I sure had a good little load going back across though, dragging a 100 pound sow with a 60 pound cur dog riding on top of her, and carrying the CD by his vest. I guess if we arent getting on runners, we're getting on swimmers  |
