A buddy of mine is giving me a 2 yr. old female AB that is just a pet right now, never seen a hog. How hard or easy are they to start? I've got a pit gyp that has seen 3 hogs and is catching good but she is the only one I've tried to start. Ya'll with AB experience give me some pointers please.

AB's or crosses is all I have and I love them but they are not PITS! If she doesnt swallow a hog up the first time she sees one, My wife's house dog (reg. AB female) bayed like a champ the first 7 or 8 times I put her on a hog then the switch flipped on and now she is like a Gator. Just give her a little time if she needs it.

I agree with raider,....don't expect this dog to bust the first hog she sees, probably won't happen. One of my closest friends and hunting buddy has raised American bulldogs for over 40 years......(Scott type) and I've been around them all that time....they are very different to a pit. Give the dog time and I'm bettin' she'll make you a real catch dog.

All good advice to that "loaded" question.  Took one of my best AB CD's almost 2 years before he got solid.  On the other hand I have one at the house who will catch the first hog she sees and she is just a pup with the same father of my male.  I am no AB expert like Scott or some others, but what i did learn was patience and they will come around.  Just boils down to if you want to put the time into a slow starter.  Glad I did because Chief is one of the best I have owned Grin

A 2 year old AB is grown (meaning mentally mature)...you show it a hog, it better be excited about the project and want to engage, it may be unsure if it is OK to engage...but it should want to. And once you show the dog it's OK to engage (ie. letting another dog in there to catch with it) it should engage. We aren't talking about a pup or even a juvenile, we are talking about a grown bulldog, so the dog not being an APBT is irrelevant due to the age and maturity factor. It shouldn't take too much to get a dog like that started.

My Dallas bitch caught the first hog she saw....just about pulled my sons, who's 6'1" and 230 pounds, shoulder out of socket to get to it. She was a little over 2 years old when I got her, and she had been off the plane for 3 days when we showed her the hog.
