Well despite the weather that came in my huntin buddy and I decided to make a run tonite. Lots of rain and lightning, but we had the itch to get the dogs out. Got on this little boar within 45 minutes of turning the dogs out. He bayed up in a creek bed in the bottom of a canyon under a rock overhang and was workin the dogs pretty good. We got to him got him legged and stuck him. Started checkin dogs and Rowdy our best dogs jaw was broke in half. So its gonna be a pretty good vet bill. Hopefully he'll be able to hunt again. The pig was 175-200lbs. Not much on tusks but still worked the dogs pretty good.

That's a bad injury,....hope he heals up ok. One of my buddies lost a heck of a dog to that kind of thing. She wanted to catch right acroos the bridge of the nose on a hog, she was a young bluetick and just getting started good on hogs, but had the makings of being a super dog when we got on a large, old boar hog that decided to fight after a long race, she caught him on the snout and he threw her off once but she came back, the next time he broke her lower jaw all apart in the hinge....had to put her down. Good luck with your dog.

I don't think you will ever be able to hunt him again.

I had that happen to my best strike dog at 6. Waited over 1 year for it to heal before she stepped foot in the woods. The first hog I caught again with her, she got the same injury. Cost me $1000 the first time and I wont even go into the second time. Grin

They can wire it up shut and it will heal in about 3 months but the bone will never be strong enough for the pressure of hunting.

And I caught both hogs with her broken jaw and all! Grin

Sorry for your dog.....I know how you feel, I retired one that way.

Had a walker/plott gyp that broke her jaw and it healed up and i hunted her for another year after she healed up, it never rebroke and she still caught just the same.
