Just was lookin over a bulldog of mine that had a pretty rough battle a week ago tomorrow night. Hes kind of an important dog to my APBT breeding program.  His nuts seem to be swollen. I was considering taking him tomorrow morning to the vet and I guess that would be the only way to know for sure. He doesnt have any visible wounds in that area, but he got slung around pretty good on the hunt. I have felt him up and it doesnt seem to bother him as far as pain is involved. Judging by the location of the catch he was involved in, I would imagine he may have gotten slung into a tree or caught in vines or even taken a shot from the hog before he made the catch. I may just be paranoid, but was just curious if anyone has ever noticed the swollen nuts on a dog after battle. My main concern is because I do plan on breeding him down the line. Any thoughts or advice would be appreciated

Get him checked as quick as you can. If it is brucellosis and one of his nuts rupture, he can go down hll real fast. Let us know how it turns out.

I just got back from taking Kajun to the vet. His nuts werent as swollen this morning, but the vet was able to see what I was talking about. She deals with several hog hunters and mentioned that brucellosis is uncommon around these parts but not unheard of. She drew blood and is sending it off to some lab in Texas. I think Texas A&M. I should know something next week. She mentioned that with the onset of brucellosis their is usually an increase in temp and his temp is normal. Ill be checking it often to try to catch it fast. thanks guys for the comments and concern. Ill let yall know next week when we get the results back.

Mike,
If a dog does have it and is able to fight it and keep his nuts, can it reappear? Can they be bred? Just curious and the vet had to see a hurt horse so I wasnt able to ask all of the questions that I wanted to. Thanks again

good luck with your dog. My dog just got it from a hog recently and after 2-3 weeks now of taken 2-3 tetracycline pills a day and his nuts are finally starting to shrink back to normal. I heard its not good to reproduce with them after they have had it so I am very lucky that it happened to a dog I never planned on breeding with anyways.

hoghunterdfw,

did the vet you went to have to send blood off for testing or what? how swollen did your dogs nuts get? kajun wasnt all that bad......they just look kind of plump. i also learnd that brucellosis is a zoomatic disease, meaning that humans can get it as well. I know that kajun has never caught a hog that i wasnt right there covered in blood with him.

anyone ever heard of a person getting brucellosis?

Yes, people can get brucellosis from a hog. There are rare cases, but I think most of them contracted from people cleaning hogs with cuts on their hand.

Yes, it can reappear. I had three dogs get it several years back. After a 30 day treatment with tetracycline, it came back a couple of weeks later. I did 3 30 day treatments... one dog finally knocked it, but the other two had to be neutered. My Clifford dog that I just lost about a month ago, had his testicle rupture. All the infected fluid went up inside him. It was the weekend and I had a vet appointment the following Tuesday... he didn't make it. It will fool you if that happens because when the testicle ruptures, the dog will act and feel 100% better. Not all antibiotics work on brucellosis, I now keep a bottle of tetracycline pills on hand.

Usually it's just one nut that swells, but it gets three or four times larger than normal. I'm not sure about breeding a dog that recovers from it, I never asked the vet or tried. My vet also said hat it is going around bad this year, as she has treated several cases.

Only one of my dogs nuts was swollen. The vet I use did not do any special test.  But I was told that the swollen testicle was a pretty definitive sign of brucellosis, as there is not much else that can cause that.  Other than having a swollen testicle though my dog did not show any other symptoms and acted completely healthy, ate and drank regularly, stool looked regular, acted full of energy.  I asked the vet and he gave me his approval so I started hunting him again regularly after the swelling went down some, about 2 weeks after treatment started.

Yes, Mike is right people can get it, but it is pretty rare I think for you to get it from another species. My dog looks a lot better now and I hope it does not come back again and again like what Mike said cuz then I would have to neuter him too.

this isnt as much the nuts as the nut sack. just filled find of poofy. Ill know next week and the doctor already gave me anitbiotics in case he develops a fever or if the testicle swells up. as of right now he is just on cephelexin for his flesh wounds. thanks for the replies.

Dont the hogs get it from ticks?

When you get a chance stop by my kennel and feel my dogs up too. I think they might have it too, but I don't want to get bitten. Pups may need it as well. We got them jagds on the ground for ya to see as well.
