I got away from the fire academy a couple hours early so I just went home got my dogs loaded and headed to a cow pasture of ours where I had seen some rooting the week end before. Wanted to try one of those good evening hunts and see if I could'nt put a flashlight to use.
. Got to the place about 415pm, unloaded the dogs and they were gone a few minutes when my spooky Joe dog opened up shortly followed by my Paris gyp. So I grabbed my gun and started toward them but they were in a bad briar thicket which my shirt will attest too. I never could get close crawling through briars and the hog would break then bay, break then bay. Finally they got him stopped good down in a creek and I crawled close enough for a shot. It was a pretty bay in a bend of the creek, just two dogs, Joe was on one side of the bend and Paris on the other with the hog in the middle. Had the hog killed by 4:55, and loaded in the truck by 5:30. Didn't even have to use the flash light. It was a good hunt for Joe, he found a hog for the first time over a pretty good strike dog and did a good job stopping this hog when he tried to run. I can't wait to get him on some more hogs and see what I can make out of him. He likes to get out and hunt with my gyp so he is showing some promise. It was a young boar but pretty good size for his age. He would have been a nice one in a few years Had to take him by Pops house to get a few pictures.
Spooky Joe (black and tan) and Paris (brindle).
