Got away again!!!

I went across the road on one of my leases monday evening for a quick run to see about a boar that my father-in-law had gotten some pics of on his trail camera. The pups hit the woods like their tails were on fire and I thought they were trashing on deer because my buddy's semi open dog was giving plenty of mouth and covering a lot of ground. They made a big loop nearly out of hearing and came back toward me. I was pretty disgusted with them when they bayed about 200 yd over on another place! My pit/dane rcd had followed me from the house (long story, part of the reason I wasn't very happy) which I didn't like at all and he had it caught immediately. Before I could even cross the fence the dogs broke and left and the rcd came to me which I thought was really strange. He was bloody but not cut so I thought it was from the hog. I figured they caught a shoat and killed it and left on the rest of the pigs. They bayed again nearly back to my house so I went around on the road on the 4 wheeler but they broke again and the pups were crossing the road when I came by and they came to me. I just thought oh well just junky pups anyway. The next day I noticed the rcd's mouth looked funny. Turns out his jaw was broke and half of his bottom teeth were off to one side! I didn't see that before so I checked the bay dogs and my buddy's dog had a good cut on her belly. I don't think it was a shoat! I don't know for sure but have had a good boar bayed 4 times in that one area and he has gotten away every time and I'm thinking it may be the same pig. I was happy that the pups ran him a total of about 2 miles, I just wish I hadn't screwed them up and pulled them off the track. Next time I'm going to be more prepared for that hog!!!

I hate to hear about your RCD. Will it recover to catch again?

My vet has quite a bit of hog dog experience and he said that it would heal crooked of course but should not affect his catching or holding ability. He's only about a year old and I've just really started using him here lately. Even if he didn't heal up right he would be a yard dog, my wife loves him to death!

Man that sucks about your catch dog, hope he heals up..  Think id take a bunch of gritty leggy dogs and like ninja said run him into the ground!!

If this is the same hog he will bay for no more than 2 loose dogs. Whenever i have put more dogs on him he broke. Of course some good dogs would probably put him in his place, something with some bottom. The way they ran him the other night he must have a set of lungs cause the were moving! I wish that dogs jaw would have held, I'd have pictures to go with the story!

We've got a cur that is pretty catchy and has had his jaw broke twice now. We got him fixed up after the first break and let him stay on the injured list for around 5 months and the first time back the jaw got broke again. Were tryin to run him now with a muzzle on him to hopefully keep it from happening again.

Good lesson to be learned. Always check your dog over after a hunt. Hope your dog heals up. A crooked mouth will affect the holding.  I am sure a night with a broken jaw wasn't a fun one.

One of my buddies had a bleutick gyp that had as much promise as any dog I've seen in many years,.....she was young and wanted to catch a hog across the bridge of the nose. We got on a hero of a boar hog that ran a long race and bayed up near where they jumped him.....had about 5 dogs on him, most were Plotts, guy that killed it said the little bleutick caught him across the nose and he slung her off, she ran back in and caught him again in the same place, this time he slung her loose and crushed her jaw near the back.....had to put her down. it's hard on a dog to have a broken jaw......hope yours heals up fine.

we are having the same prob. i think we are puttin to much pressure on the hogs and making them run. we aint gonna run more than two loose bay dogs and one that will put teeth on one. we ran a hog the other day with five or six dogs and he never even checked up.

I had quite a few little training sessions over the summer with one dog out and one leashed. The place I hunted is notorious for sour, bad running hogs. I bayed decent hogs every single time I went out there. Most of them bayed right where they were found.

Luckily the vet said that his whole jaw was not broke, just a piece of it at the front where the canine is to the center of his mouth. Probably about an inch and a half piece right there is just turned down a little with the teeth on it. He can still eat just fine and doesn't seem to be in much pain. He is muscle sore in his shoulder too, I imagine he got slung around a little and thats saying something because he weighs nearly 100 lbs.! Ninja, I wish I even got on hogs every time I went hunting! These dry runs are no good for the pups.

Sounds like a good hog. just keep after him and try different techniques and his time will come.
