I will list the things I have tried and if you have a better way please let me know. She has a broken back leg so I cant use to much force, because she makes things worse by trying to get away. I have 3 different pills I need to give twice daily. I have to get the Antibiotic down, the other two for pain and inflamation, well they are a plus. 1. I have opened her mouth put the pill to the very back of throat and hold it closed until she swallows.Blow in nose. not working anymore. 2.Put pills in her food or a piece of food, cheese, weiners, raw meat, she now chews her food very well.
I thought about trying to break it down in water and put it in a syringe and give it to her the same way that I do when I worm her. If you have a better way Please let me know. Thanks in Advance, JT

Can't believe the hotdog chunks don't fool her, she must have a sensitive palate You can always just crush them up, mix them into a solution and give orally with syringe. Squirt a little in with the head tipped up and mouth held shut till she swallows, then repeat till done. Helps to lock your legs around her while you do it. Did they put a rod in or what?

Noah, They have not done the procedure yet ,I resceduled for Thursday morning. I am taking her to a different Vet (more Experienced). When the Vet takes a look inside she will know exactly what can be done. If the damage is not to bad she will try to pin the part that is broke off. She did not loose the whole head of the femor. I will hope for the best. If the vet can re-attach the bone it will be a better procedure. Tonight I put the medicine in raw deer meat and I actually got all 3 pills down. Most of the time a dog dont chew that much, but this one will chew till the pill falls out and will not eat anything else for a few hours. It sucks in the morning trying to get it done before I leave for work. Thanks again for the help.JT

TRy standing with her head between your knees, both of you facing the same direction. with left hand under the jaw, use you fingers to pry mouth open, with your free hand take pill and put in the back of her throat, and push till gag reflx while holding her muzzle in and almost nose in your chest position and closed , until swallowed. Lock your knees to prevent her going backwards, right behind her ears.your left hand keeps her head in position where she can't get lower to break free.
After this is done do not let her go, while she is fighting and then released she learns the fight gets her freedom. I hold them in this position and pet, talk to after they stop fighting. while they are fighting I firm and scold. Praise for proper behavior of being calm and standing still. they learn not to fight it so much.
My chihauhau is the hardest animal I have to do anythinhg with, because I can't hold him this same way. I manage to worm and medicate all 30 of the others by myself with this method, even when they don't like it.

There are also several kinds of "pill guns" out there for giving domestic animals pills. Any feed store should have something that would work if the dog is hard to give pills to.

I've done it a few times..... Just like Krystal said, you hold their mouth open, drop the pills to the back of their throat, and I like to use my thumb & just cram the pills down their throat. If they spit them out, you do it until they don't.
