Started my catahoula (8-9 months old) in a pen yesterday. Didn't go as I wanted it to. I put him in a pen with 2 small sows, one of them around 80 lbs but pretty rough, and my brindle curr (a very girtty dog) hoping he'd do as the curr does, well Doofus as expected goes in and goes nuts, to the point I guess he scared the crap out of the catahoula, because he wants OUT, lol.. Well tried it for awile, and with some other dogs, and same thing, he wanted out, didnt want no part of no pig. So I said oh well, live and learn, and decided to find a home for him next week or give him back to the original owner. (he wanted the dog to work but didn't have to time to work him)

Well after most people and other dogs left, I decided to give it one more shot, and tied him up outside the pen, after he set there for a few minutes, he started baying, not really ever going nuts, but baying and gettin more and more confident.

So, well crap, do I keep working with him? Or find him a home? He is really immature, looks like he was babied ALOT. I just wonder if he's worth the time, I don't mind feeding this dog for awile, but I also don't want to spend a few months on another potential cull. Really like his looks, he's big for his age. Will try to get a picture up later.

Shawn keep working with him. Ive noticed that with our catahoula pups...at least the males....take a lil longer to mature and to start getting really interested in hogs. We introduced them to a small shoat at 5 months and they just looked at it without knowing what to do and acted a lil scared as well....then when they turned about 11 months we put them in again with a small hog and they just wanted to eat it up. Now the female was a different story, she bayed the first time she saw a hog and still is baying. Give him another try and keep working him.

I always give a prospect that is his age at least a month or so to show me something.  I always start curs slow by putting them outside pen.  I personally have only trained my last three dogs in the woods without ever putting them in a baypen and it has worked out pretty well.  But just like anything else, it takes time and patience.

try keeping him out of the pen while the other dogs work . i know thats how Mr. Wager gets his pups started , they run loose on the outside while we works the begginer in the pen . they bark and play until they want to get in on the action then they come over the tin and though the fence . he has a gritty little six mth. old name ike started that way

Hey I hate that feeling, we always want them to hit the ground working. I'd give it a little time.

NO SIR THEY ARE ADDING LIKE TWO STALLS so he can get to that big s.o.b. and cut his tusk he weighs about 400pds. now  . I NEVER MET Mr.Johnny . Mr. Chester and my dad have been breeding dogs for a while and my old man has not been workin his dogs so he sent me over there to work them . i bring a little feed for the hogs and Mr.Chester lets me work my dogs . he said Johnny ben busy with work but as soon as he get some time off i hope they call me , i 'd be glad to help with the work.  do you know Mr.Johnny? have you seen their hogs? you know Mr.chester came in third at a cow dog trail i think they had like 26 entres.
