Help with barking/whining dog

i know i used to were a ball cap all the time and if a dog needed correcting i would kinda whoop em around the face with my cap not hard just enough to get the message . and it got so as to any time i took my hat off [just to wipe my brow ] or adjust my hair or something every dog on the yard would lay down or jump in there houses . rocks are the same way now i can just bend over and acked like i'm picking something up to throw at em they lay down and shut up .
