Last night while deer hunting a boar came out of the woods and being the opportunist that I am I went and got some dogs. I dropped Red and LJ near where I saw him and picked them up about an hour later on a county road they were crossing. At that point they had run over 6 mi. in that hour, and they were on track the whole time. How long and how fast does a dog have to push a hog to get them to bay? This is NOT a rough vs loose dog question so please dont go there, I have my opinions about that already. I know there are a lot of variables here but this hog ran through some of the nastiest junk around and crossed multiple open hay pastures as well. I would have loved to have left the dogs on him but they were way off of anything I have permission to be on.

It would probably be easier to tell you what that hog ate for lunch last tuesday  Wink.  Every hog is different and any given hog is different day to day in my opinion.  Sometimes they run, sometimes they dont.

We have been seeing this alot here in Mississippi . We have struck on fresh sign and the dogs will keep going and going . I also talk to a few friends lately and they have been having the same trouble . I was told that most of these hogs have just been plain educated to run and keep running .

My guess is that he was well educated as well,I hunt in between Vidor and Evadale Texas where just about hunter has a pack of dogs. These hogs around here are runners from hell because they get dogged so hard. The first time I ever hunted the panhandle I freaked out, some of those hogs would stand in the middle of a wheat field until the dog took a nip. These southeast TX hogs start running when they hear a tailgate drop and for good reason.

My experience here lately is this, if we see the hogs before dumping the box we get outrun 9 out of 10 times it seems especially if the hogs know they have been seen.

Always heard this from the old timers and I agree! Whenever we see incidental hogs while hunting we almost NEVER catch that hog.. Even seen it with groups of hogs. I'm sure it differs from area to area, I can see it being much easier in open country to do

We have caught several that we have seen in pastures before dumping the dogs, but not near as many that we've seen in the woods...

Where I live you very seldom see hogs hanging out in pastures,up in the panhandle I saw over 200 head many times in wheat fields, this  southeast TX redneck couldnt believe it the first time I saw that!!!!!!Paduca is 10 hours from me but I would jump in my truck in 2 seconds if I still had access to that land.Larry Jones has an awesome place up there, there was a rancher in the Flomot area named Clois that also had a hog problem.Due to the bad ecomomy the guy I was guiding for lost his lease with Mr.Jones, made me sick because that is a hog hunters dream up in the panhandle.I have never seen so many hogs in my life and was amazed at how they bayed so easily. The only bad thing about hunting your dogs up there is they get spoiled!!!!When I first brought my dogs back home they  werent used to spending all night sometimes times trying to find hogs.

Yeah, Matt is probably right. The other very likely possibility is that my dogs suck. Lol
