Well, the weekend of the big dogs on hogs hunt on our deer lease finally got here. I got out there Friday night and got camp set up. Met a few new folks and got some sleep. Saturday AM the troops arrived. The lease manager invited a buddy of his and his son. By the time word got out half of east Texas showed up with every dog in east Texas. Craig did a pretty good job keeping it organized.
We hunted a section at a time, sending a crew in from one side with another group waiting on the other side with some dogs for any hogs that broke out of the timber. A good plan, only one problem. The rain from the weekend before had the whole damned 2200 acres under water. Every time the dogs would find a track they would lose it when it got to water. We hunted hard all day Saturday and only one little pig to show.
One fellow had a dog run a hog onto the deer lease next door to the southwest and had problems with the manager. He would not let us go over to find the dog and at one point implied they had shot it. Never did find the dog, and it was a good one.
Sunday morning we woke up and heard dogs on the NE corner of the lease. Craig and Randy went over to see if it might be his dog. They followed the dogs across our lease onto some property to the east. They finally caught up to the dogs and it was a different neighbors 2 boxers and shaggy house dog running a sow about 100#. The dogs had pretty much chewed it up so they caught it and brought it back to butcher.
I got to try out the rig I built for the back of my ATV. It carried Achilles (my Dogo) and 3 curs pretty well. I'm working on something for the front this week to carry 2-3 dogs.
