Have a red nose pit about 15 mnths. I don't know if he is pure. He has the ears of a cur. Other than that he seems and acts and handles himself like a pit. He has an exceptional high prey drive. Our problem is we are trying to use him as a walk in catch dog and he can't stand it. He wants to be hunting with the curs. When walking him on lead behind the curs while they are hunting he is whining and bawling non stop. He wants to be hunting. If we un-leash him he stops all the whining and bawling, becomes silent and hunts like nobody's business. Covers every square inch of ground , sniffs every nook and cranny there is . He would probably make a good RCD. But we are training some 10 mnth. old cur pups and we are afraid if we hunt him as a RCD the cur pups will start catching and not bay. It would be very slow getting to him in the swamps and marshes that we hunt if he were to be used as a RCD. He will catch. He does not bay.
My question is do you think maybe with a shock collar we could stop all that whining and bawling while he is on lead? We really want to use him as a walk in catch dog. I've used a shock collar a few times at home to solve other issues and he gets it on the first time. He is great with the other dogs and loves to please. I would hate to start over with another dog but we will if we have to. Your thoughts and Ideas please.

well a good dose of doggy valium before hunting should help some  my cd male is the same way . he used to be a good dog till i started hunting with a young man that would take off running with his cd to a bay . now me i ain't runnin to a bay like a banshie ,but after that every time he'd [the dog] hear a bay he goes nuts wanting to get in there and will dang near pull you down to do it . but while just hunting and walking he's not too bad mouthy just likes to BOLT every now and then nearly pullin ya arm out . but he is all proffessional and stylish when he hits a hog . i would try taking the dog to a bay pen and work him on being quiet with all that noise and baying going on to see if you can correct it . or a muzzle while on the lease helped me some , and like i said a GOOD dose of doggie valium works wonders while hunting |

Well unless you use "quit" for everything. example dogs jumping on people you say quit, dogs trashin you yell quit. Just saying if a dogs doing wrong its much easyer for them to accociate one word with bad behavior. I usually stick with NO or EEHHH... The last ones more flexable. Anyway when useing the collar the idea is to start at the lowest setting that you can tell the dog feels it and that can be as much as seeing the ears go back. When the dog does the bad behavior you say your command and hit your button once. Timming is the most important thing. It must be immediately following your command. Do it a couple times then bump it up a notch untill the dog stops the behavior. Increase the strength untill the dog stops the barking and pulling. you can also slap the back with the lead if theyre pulling. Sounds like your holding back a good dog but that just my oppinion. U may just try a bark collar an take it off when u turn him loose that way the timing wnt be off

When he pulls or barks pop him with leash. I didnt say beat the heck out of him just sharp pops. Works the same as a shock collar. My cdogs are pretty well behaved but sometimes they act out a bit. O make them stop completly when you do this so he knows to quit.
