What brings this up is because I have a buddy that lost some dogs yesterday and it got me to thinking how long have y'all lost a dog for? And how far did he or she go when someone called or you found them? I myself have only lost them for a couple of days but some of my hunting buddy's have lost them when hunting with me for along time last time was catch and tie 2 he lost the same gyp here at my hunting spot for 9 days she was 12 miles from where we was looking, another friend lost a hound about 10 miles from his house one night when we was coon hunting 6 days later she was a half mile from his house walking down the hwy and another buddy of ares picked her up, so lets here some stories how long and how far? I no I don't like to leave them and most times I won't but things happen and you just can't find them.

hog dog wise Ive had one gone 4 days, ended up going through 4 different people before ending up in another hog doggers yard that was not honest she had my name plate on her and never got a call, he hunted her for a day and it was like pulling teeth to get her back. She ended up 20 miles from where I lost her, needless to say I was fire red mad at the end but was happy to get her back. We had a pair of bear hounds missing for a month in the mnt's of california, dont know how they survived but they did.

Lost one of our strike dogs several years ago for six months. This was before garmin tracking system. Lady finally called about 8 miles from where we had been hunting. The dog is a little shy she said but she had been feeding him at a barn on her place. We really figured that he had died in the woods or somebody picked him up. We looked for him for about a month. Walked a many mile out there and even went out there hunting. Never came to a bay. Glad that my collars have name tags

My brother in law lost a young dog for three months with a garmin collar and name plate. The collar quit working and we never found the dog. Figured someone picked it up and wrote it off as a loss, never thought no more of it until he got called asking about the dog. I don't know what that dog did for three months, but he did something to staying eating, whether it was at someones house or in the woods, I just don't know.

Before I knew what a tracking system was. 32 days, lost him 18 miles from house and found him walking toward the house about 1/4 mile from the house.

I found where a very large boar stayed and my brother and I made plans to catch him...long story short he whipped our dogs and probably killed one we never found and my very best dog I lost for right at 3 weeks...I drove 50 miles round trip every day and I put up flyers everywhere and switched sweaty shirts every other day. one day I saw the shirt was moved under some briars and I knew he was around and 2 days later I found him there and he was already healing pretty good from the cuts...right after that I got my tracking system.
another time I lost a 6 month old pup that was running a hog with the big dogs and he came up missing and a car was leaving out of the vicinity in the middle of nowhere... 6 -7 months later I get a call that they had my dog and on the collar it had reward with my number...they were having a big party so they probably needed the beer money...I was glad to get him back because he was making and did make a good hog dog... he was at least 30 miles from where we lost him. I try to hunt when I know I can be off the following day in case I have to look for a dog.

Training dogs is not about quantity, it's more about timing, the right situations, and proper guidance...After that it's up to the dog... A hunting dog is born not made...

This topic is why i like short range OLD dogs Knock on wood never had to leave one. If my old man stays out for more than 30min i give him a holler, if he barks hes runnin one, if he dont he just checks in then goes out.

A friend of mine called me last year and said he thought someone had stolen three of his dogs. They had been missing for three weeks disappearing from his house. He found them six weeks after they had gone missing, they were 14 miles away and all three had been cut up but were in fairly decent shape. Apparently they got loose and went rogue for awhile. A neighboring rancher spotted them and called Ty it took two days to catch em.
