Im wondering how long it would take to establish a standard. For instance, if you take Full blooded dogs from say - catahoula, BMC, Red Bone, and Pitt breeds and crossed them up. Not even worrying about working ability. Just trying to establish a standard size, weight and color. Selectively breeding, culling for a specific appearance. How long do you think it would take?

I know the catahoula would throw a wrench into the selection so let's just say you stayed away from the leopard pups in your culling. Went with a solid dog, or close to it.

I don't know but some of it will depend on the breeds used. Some carry more dominant traits than other breeds so my guess is that that will also come into play...
but one thing for sure...the more you know about dog genetics the faster you will get to the end product.

Training dogs is not about quantity, it's more about timing, the right situations, and proper guidance...After that it's up to the dog... A hunting dog is born not made...

IM NOT TRYING TO BE RUDE OR SMART. IM JUST CURIOUS AND WONDERING WHY YOU WOULD NOT CULL FOR WORKING ABILITY IN A WORKING DOG. CULLING FOR A SPECIFIC APPERANCE OR LOOK IS WHAT IS WRONG WITH ALOT OF THE HUNTING BREEDS TODAY. JUST WONDERING.

Just a scenario brother. In our little experiment if you want to wait until they are tested dogs before you cull you can but this is going to significantly increase the time it takes to standardize. Remember my original question. How long to standardize four crosses into a breed?

Just so everyone is clear - just like most hunters I am not interested in breeding dogs just for appearance. Just wondering how long it would take to establish a breed with these crosses.

Once you got the percentages to your liking say 1/4 of each. If you bred the ones you wanted based on appearance I would not think real long 3 or 4 breedings you should have mostly standard pups with one odd ball here and there.
