For us, its until we get at least 50 or 60 yards from the bay and then turn the catch dog loose so he doesn't have to stay caught too long. Which helps reduce the number of times that the dogs get cut.

If we have pups on the ground, we may let them bay the hog for a bit before we turn the catch dog loose.

What you gonna do with them rough curs? Lol... We normally get close enough to the bay that when the catchdog gets there we can be right behind him to give him some help. 50-80yrds

I was taught as close as possible. Try to see whats bayed plus you see the action and ur bulldog has way less chance getting hurt with u just steps behind.

I always wait till at farthest 75-80 yard, but usually try to wait till 15-20 yards. You gotta play it by ear though. So far I've been blessed and lucky. Knock on wood after around 150 hogs with Connie Chung and my buddies pit "girl", I have yet to see Connie take any more then mild scrapes and her vest doesn't even hardly look used.

wish i could say that about my new vest.. Evil we usually try to get them in close enough to see the bay but it usually doesnt work out. i dont like sending the dog unless i can get there to help him out pretty fast. probably 75 yards or so.

It's always good to be able to see the bay and what kind of hog you're dealing with before you release... but it doesn't always work out that way. If we can hear some fussin' going on we'll send em in from 100+, but if we can get in close to see what's going on and be right behind, that's ideal. This may not be the best way, but it's how we do it.  Grin

X2! Always good to survey the situation before you let the catch dog/dogs go.  Had a friend in east Texas who cut his pit loose without seeing the hog and he then had to handle a  three hundred pounder by himself.  The end result was a cut dog and a cut up hog dogger.

Like others have said depends on situation. First how fast can u get there to help, the quicker u get hands on the hog the better. also size of catch dog ex height, weight. From wat I've read taller is better if u take awhile to get to the bay. Do ur curs catch with him? The longer ur bulldog is caught theres more possibility of injury. Imo try to get as close as possible, plus u get to watch the dogs work.

I dump them ol catch dogs as soon as they hear em. The longest I drop is about 3-400. But I drop em and I follow em in. Im usually about 75 yards away when they hit!!!

You must either hunt pretty open country or have some slow catch dogs!!!  Grin

Most of our spots, if you cut them from 50 - 75 yards it still takes you a little bit to crawl through them thickets!!
