I have an English Pointer female 2 1/2 years old. I got her about a month ago, I have taken her to a baypen twice and hunting once. The first time in a pen she got ran over by the hog and started baying but after a few minutes got bored and quit the second time I put her in a pen my ybmc male caught the hog and she caught. Both times she was more interested in hunting around the pens than baying or catching. When I took her hunting she was hunting 700 to 800 yards she hunts her butt off.. The only reason I got her was to breed her to my ybmc to get more nose. The question is should I make sure she will bay or catch a hog before I breed her?

Has she ever been on hogs before you got her? I think the long time persistent baying is a taught thing, an interest in hogs is not. She shows interest, but doesn't know what to do with it yet. Ought to make some good dogs imo.

Marines I see as two breeds, Rottweilers or Dobermans, because Marines come in two varieties, big and mean, or skinny and mean. They're aggressive on the attack and tenacious on defense. They've got really short hair and they always go for the throat. RAdm. "Jay" R. Stark, USN; 10 November 1995

No she had never saw a hog before 3 weeks ago. I think she will, she has a lot of energy and she can run very fast and if I can get those traits in her pups and the grit of my ybmc I think I will have jam up dogs

I had a EP for a little while and he also would rather hunt around than to stay and bay a hog.. ( woods.. didnt put him in a pen ) Once the hog was caught he would jump in with them.. Keep showing her hogs and she will probably turn it on more... Atleast shes showing to have hunt in her..

Thanks guys, yall seem to have the same thoughts as I do, I got her for the hunt and if I breed her to my male I'm sure I will get the grit, this dog hasn't had a chance for anything she's just been in a guys pen all her life. I don't have any pictures I will take some though. I can't wait to get some pups off my ybmc and her.

The English pointer has more than enough noise to find a pig. Anydog does! Its weather they know how to use it or not. I just got 9mo old male. The first time in the pen he bayed em up real tight. Put a stag pup in training in with him, when he saw her catch that was all she wrote. now he lugs up and catches another as soon as I leg and flip. All in the pen work so far. He still needs more basic obediance training before Im comfortable taking to the woods with him. I know he wont be the hardest dog I have but with some backup he'll find and catch just fine. Good luck with your female.

I used to guide quail hunts on the King ranch. Just about all the dogs we had for the camp were pointers. There were lots of hogs on that place back in them days. The pointers pointed hogs all the time. We lost a dog or two to hogs as well as javelina.
Pointers are tough dogs and can run in the heat. I know lots of the squirrel dog boys are crossing fiests to bird dogs for the speed.
