I recently applied for one position at work and it quickly turned into a interview for a different position (cant go into much more detail at this point).  The problem i am faced with is this...

I grew up around horses, chickens and dogs, and have helped work cows in the past. Not scared of cows and can move cows from one place to another, but thats where my experience ends.  I was pretty much told i need to learn how to identify different types of cows.  Now i know what a brahman looks like, and ive done some lookin on the net.  But i really dont see any difference between a brangus, angus, charolais, chiangus etc....

Can anyone tell me a good website to look all these up with accurate pictures etc.. Or a little wisdom from a cowhand to a breed identification idiot  Grin  would be GREATLY appreciated.

And the off chance that one of the florida boys reads this, what are the main breeds here in FL?

yes and no.. it was a marine unit interview but i guess my "redneck" qualities showed through and now there is an opening in the agricultural unit, and the powers to be suggested i learn how to identify breeds..

I would work on those in your county, which your way are mostly brangus (their are usually black with short hair, a little more eary and have flappier dew laps), charolais which if you go south on 27 they are the big hairy (ugly) white cows to your left and then good range cows that have a prominant amount of Brahman to them maybe a little hereford (white faces) and goodness only knows what lol and although I haven't seen a 'pure' angus where you are they look alot like the charolais except they are black (some red but not so much there).

If you happen to run into a chiangus lemme know, I have been missing that big sob for a while now!

It isn't too terribly hard to identify them once you get your basics down for angus, hereford, brahman and charolais dowb your way and good luck....I would love to be an ag deputy.

Thanks Ashley.. yeah it would be a cool job if i get it.  I was in Muse the other day baiting a trap and one of my uncle's bulls figured my bucket of corn should be his and "nudged" me a little.. Needless to say i have a decent bruise on my back.
