I just acquired an awesome line-bred German Short Haired-pointer pup named Merle Haggard. I can already tell he's the smartest dog I've ever had and I've had some pretty smart ones. Just want to get some info on training them for bird hunting. I'd like to be able to use him for quail or pheasants and also to retrieve ducks. He's already retrieving a frisbee like a champ and he's only 4 months old and I've only had him a week. He came in the house the other day and saw my hog mount (first hog he had ever seen and it wasn't even alive) and he bayed it for 30 minutes.

If that was his reaction to a mounted hog, screw the bird hunting, and make him a hog dog. Grin

x2! dual purpose!!! I've always wanted a bird dog, but only bird hunt around here bout 2 months outa the year. it would be hard for me to justify feeding one for the other 10 months or else I prolly would.

Buy and read the books waterdog and uplanddog by J.R. Wolters. They are the bibles as far as retriever training goes, you won't be disappointed with the results. I have trained quite a few retrievers following those books with great results.

I agree, its a great book and if you are into dogs and dog training its an easy read. I read it the first time in 2 days and i bet i've read it dozen times since.

I have a Drathaar. The club breed of the GSP. They r great dogs and yes very intelligent. One of her pups did a photo shoot for cabelas and will be in the fall catalog. Abby points, flushes, retrieves land or water and oh yes will run down a Hog. Ive noticed with her and the one that my buddy has that they are independent and not likely to honor a bay. Or they haven't yet. You won't get a better all around dog....other than the jagd terrier. Evil since you won't be doing field trials or proving her for a breeder number then that takes a lot of pressure off. Your pup should naturally retrieve and point on scent. Some differences are that labs mark their retrieve or rely on hand casting and DD or GSP retrieve on scent for what is out of sight. The only command is fetch. There is no hand casting. Since Merle is already retrieving then force fetching will be unneeded. Teach manners along the way and make sure that any fresh kill bird is completely dead. A flapping bird is what causes hard mouths. That one is much easier to prevent than correct. Good luck and there is plenty more on the Internet. Best advise is don't try to make a prodigy out of him, appreciate him for what he has learned already. Oh and I don't know if u deer hunt but their blood tracking ability will also amaze.

Don't pass up Robert Milner's book Retriever Training for the Duck Hunter. Excellent book, and one of the best I have read that explains every step to you. Read Waterdog first, but follow it with Milner's book. They will tie together great. He also has a new book out, Back To Basics. My buddy in Buna just bought a Drath, and he picked up the new book. Said it is very good also.

Gsp's have incredible drive and intelligence. Mine I used as a hogdog but he still loves to point. That book is hard to beat. I have raised many bird dogs and retrievers labs and weimaraners. A good breed pup should pick up fast sounds like yours is. Good luck hope he works out for you
