I have access to some long and narrow islands to hunt. 3 or 4 pieces that are a couple miles long X 1/4 mile wide or so. Surrounded by water. The Islands are a mix of oak ridges, cypress sloughs, and palmetto. I am kicking around the idea of getting a coon hound pup. I know some of you coon hunt so maybe you can answer a few questions.
1. Any cons to raising a hound on the same yard as my curs ?
2. Can I raise and train just 1 hound to hunt. I really don't want anymore than 1, so am I wasting my time or is it possible with just 1 dog 3. If I get a pup, how long before I can start bringing to the woods? 4. Do male hounds hunt or handle any different than female hounds? 5. I've always liked the look of them long eared Blue Ticks and them Black and Tans, any cons to either breed?

1 a hound might be more apt to bark , other than that no difference either way . 2 yes , if he is a good one . get a pup from a guy thats got good dogs . 3 i never took one with the old dogs till about 10 months 4 i don't think so 5 me too but around here walkers always shined the best . buy a pup from the breeder , not the breed

no cons to raising them on the same yard at all, and yes one good dog is all it takes . i finally got my gyp a hunting partner when she was 2 years old after nearly loosing her to a river coon . you gotta watch them ol coons and young dogs in the water . the earlier you start them the better . ain't much differant than traing hog dogs do some drags and mock hunts when they are pups . i train my hog dogs just like i did my coon hounds just used a bay pen instead of a caged coon pulled up in a tree . just like curs as far as males and females males are a little more independant . outside of the blues and b& tans being more of a cold nosed dog they are fine most the walkers have a little hotter nose on em . hope you find you a good dog to start . it is a lot of fun , made alot of good memories following them damn hounds lol

can raise them together start One around six or seven months under right conditiins. dragging caged soon can be over done. like to trap coon turn loose watch which way it goes take pup thirty minutes later stay close when dogs trees tie up dog coax to tree. shoot coon out.. i like walkers but every breed has good ones buy from a good breeder if you hunt with the Pakets or at least One of them. nothing like listening to the music of a hound running a track and really treeing hard till you get there. my legs are gone or i would still be following One. good luck

God bless and miracles happen. The old way is still the best way. Let a dog open every once in awhile. Want hurt a thing.

Yeah I was down there only on Sunday to get collars made had to work Saturday. But yeah I usually catch you down there and talk dogs for a while. Speakin of hounds I've been lookin for a male blue tick to breed to my best strike bitch I got she's getting a little old and I want some more just like her but hell she has 15 pups at a time and doesn't take care of em so I end up only saving about 5.
