I WAS WANTING YALLS OPINION OF WHEN PICKING A PUPPY OUT OF THE LITTER. DO YOU TRY TO STAY AWAY FROM THE RUNT. DO THE RUNT SEEM TO BE SMARTER THAN THE OTHER PUPPIES IN THE FUTURE. OR DOES IT NOT MATTER WHAT SO EVER. THANK YOU

I don't think it makes a difference, hell ive got 3 pups outta my bmc and the runt is by FAR my favorite at almost 5 months old!

I would try to evaluate all puppies individually and not pay much attention to which ones are bigger or smaller at a very young age. Look for which ones are showing you what you are looking for.
That being said, i know several people that love to pick the runt

I will say this. When I started doggin 10 years ago I wanted the male withe the largest block head and color matters. Then I took a runt, female.. For the last 8 years, I have chosen the runt female. They just seem to meet my needs. I have a has full of small females bu I can find and bay hogs with anybody.

when i breed a dog and sell a few pups i keep two out of every litter . i don't pick and choose the ones i keep , just wich ever male and female is left . the runts and ugly dogs is what i wind up with . the runts were no differant than the rest the litter hunt wise or any other way . at a year old without haveing to compete with the rest of the litter for feed , the runts were usually the same size as the rest the litter . some times the runts will wind up being a grittier dog do to having to fight to get into the feed bowl when pups lol .

I've been watching this litter I have now there were 7 when they were born all lived 2 females 5 males. The females have both been consistent growing and the males don't bother them almost like their not a part of the pecking order. Now out of the males 3 have steady been bigger than the other 2 someone came and got one of the smaller scrawnier ones a little over a week ago and now that it's away from the pack it's growing better and is fuller. The one smaller pup left is falling even further behind now. Mind you theyre all healthy well nourished pups. The point I'm getting at is I think sometimes it's not so much that a pup is a runt but that he is lower in the pecking order and when taken away from the more dominant pups he comes around the same as all the others.
Just my observations far from scientific.

I am on the opposite end...test and analyze each pup and hope to pick the best...a breeding program is only as good ad the pups selected...if selected right then the best of the best from that selection process will eventually get you where you want to be...

when I get pups I dont breed for, I let the breeder send me whatever two they feel works for them. It has been a good method for me, I do this because I pick the litter not the pup. I have heard both sides of the arguements, the runt fights harder for survival, but the others get the better nutrients and truthfully I feel it all has some limited validity that will make one pup stand out from the rest of the littermates, but litters stand out from other litters

The only way to truly better a program with the best possible dogs is to raise the whole litter yourself and cull for what you want. It's not possible for most including myself, so anything besides that is only making you feel better about the pups you're picking, but in reality I don't see it doing much good, because it's all about how each and every pup individually gets there start and excels from there.
