Just curious to hear how some of you set up your gyp to whelp.
Do you just put your whelping box in the kennel? Seperate her from the other dogs? Move to the garage?

In our setup we do not separate the dogs until the pups are born. That day both mom and pups are moved into their own 12x6 kennel and kept separate from the other dogs. After about a week, we open the door so the mom can leave at will, but the pups are kept in the kennel.
Now this is with our aussies, and they have the run of the fenced barn yard, none are kenneled. We have one neutered male that likes to go check out the puppies, but all the others pretty much leave them alone.
This has worked for us in out situation, but not sure if it will work for everyone else.

Bryant I read somewhere that you are suppossed to seperate the momma dog from other dogs about 2 weeks before she is due, there is some kind of disease or parasite or something I can't remember what it was they can catch from other dogs that will kill the pups. I don't know if it's true or not, but I seperated mine and all the puppies lived except for one that was still born. I just left her in a well shaded kennel in a large dog box I built awile back.
But I've also heard of plenty of people leaving dogs around the momma dog and the pups being fine. But I take every precaution I can.
Good luck with the pups.

we try to whelp the pups in a cheap 5' plastic pool and most of the time in the house or shed depending on tempature and fire ants then move them to a isolated kennel wheres theres no cats, rat, mice bird(grackles) dogs droppings where they can catch parvo coccidia ect, but the main thing is to watch out for ants and other animal droppings ,, ferel cats bad,bad and mice, bird droppings ..... these things i learned the hard way Dexter

Thanks for the ideas.
I recently moved and currently have my dogs seperated into temporary 5' X 10' kennels framed under a gravel floored lean-to on my barn. The concrete crew is working as we speak, but there's no way my permanent kennels will be constructed before my gyp whelps.
At my old place, I had a ramp up to a portable building with a swing door the mama dog could push to open comming in or out. I built a 4' X 4' whelping box and just put it inside the building. All worked perfectly, and because the building was fenced around she was free to come in and out as she chose.
Still trying to toss around ideas...

What about one of the bedrooms of your new house... ?? There's really a simple answer to that. I bought it, and therefore I would like it to STAY my house if you know what I mean! I'm just barely starting to get things settled in to go pull something like that and get invited to leave. Had a friend who tried to pull something off like that a couple years ago and got invited to go sleep in the barn. (Dexter knows who I'm talking about). I saw that fool the next day and it looked like he had chickenpox...dang fleas like to have eat him up!

Bryant, Well, DOG WELPING 101 says to ............................
I like the room idea myself. You had a good set up at the old house for sure. Keep momma and pups as far away from other dogs as possible, learned from mistake in the past. I think Matt G made a sweet welping pen last year if I remember right. It was off the ground.
