Something I've never really paid attention to until now

My two youngest pups (3/4 Curr 1/4 Cat) are a brother and sister pair.



I've never really wondered or noticed, but, when they play and chase each other around the male will heal the female and sit her down. I've noticed this in other pups I've had as well but never really put two and two together. You think this means the male will do the same on a runnin hog? Since he is doing it in play now? I've gotta think he will. They are only about 10 weeks old and playin is just playin but still, genetics shine through even early don't they? Anyway, I'm kinda excited, lol. Reuben chime in please!

My bet is that he will grow up to do just that but he might also catch an ear as he gets older...
Right now I have 5 10 week old pups that want to stop and bay anything that tries to run...Three run silent and 2 are wide open in the chase...I believe they will start that way in the woods...but usually as pups get older they tend to quiet down on track or when a hog breaks bay...Time will tell whether I am right or wrong...

The fun part is analyzing and predicting and then watching it come true...and that is a good way to learn...

10-4 on that arrowbar...I discourage mine with the bb gun and they are not as open now or sometimes they run silent...but the fact remains that it is genetics kicking and I shall remember that at breeding time...

it really isn't advice...but I use the red rider as a training and conditioning tool...not much power just enough for correction...One thing for sure...I like my dogs to not bark much around my house...

Well it didn't work!! Everytime I shot them they just barked more and more!!!  Guess I'll just cull them since the BB gun method didn't work!!

I love to watch the pups play it is natural instinct on working-baying style.  It's lots of fun to watch them trash around, from baying a frog, cat, calf, to baying your kids lol.   One of the funniest pups at 6 weeks I watched baying my son.  Every time he would go to run, the pup would grab his pants and stop him, then when he stopped the pup would back up and start baying again.  Of course I had to stop this from happening it drove him crazy, and wouldn't want anyone to think I would let a dog chew on a child!  This is how he works a hog also, if they will stand he will back up and bay, try to run and it's all teeth.  I have lots of fun watching pups working a roping calf, and it will tell you a lot about the pup.

Reatj81...excellent post...this is what I look for in pups...natural inclination...these are the pups that will be the ones that have it naturally and it should count towards breeding potential...

Well, showed the pups their first pig tonite. Way behind schedule, lol. They are 5 months old now. Anyway, Reuben, my little gyp is gonna start a little slow but my little male did exactly what I hoped he would. He grabbed the pig by the tail or the ham and spun it around every time it ran. He even tried to catch a couple times (not to happy bout that) but got thrown off. The pups have a long way to go but they are doing exactly what I was hoping they would. I have high hopes for these pups and If everything works out they are gonna be some stoppers, for sure.

Good deal Kevin...keep us posted on here as they progress...sounds like that male has it figured out on how to stop one...it is possible that he might be needing a running vest when he matures some...

thanks...I have been very busy with my job...then both my grandsons are in the superbowl so that is taking a little time...next weekend I have to pull a float in the parade...pulling my rv to the deer lease today...just busy...

but I really need to do something with the pups...I am selling one but also need to get a training pig and put him in the pen...then I need to see who will range in the woods...they are fat and healthy...about 2 weeks ago they got the big dog bark so I at least know they will be heard a long ways right now...but I will post up soon...

I understand the time problem.  These short days are making it hard on us all, & I have been so busy I don't no up from down.   Lol   I'm already tierd of having to feed with a flashlight.
