I know this topic has been discussed else where but I ma having trouble finding it on the other boards so I am hoping someone on here can help me out. I am wanting to start giving Ivomec for my once a month heart worm preventative and was wondering if there was a certain "flavor" to buy to give to a dog. Such as "sheep and swine" or "horse and cattle" or is there a percentage number for the strength on the bottle. Also I know that you should give 1/10cc per 10lbs of body weight but do you give this orally with a syringe? And last is there a minimum age you should wait till before giving to a young dog? I am wanting to give this once a month and then Strongid in addition to this every other month. Thanks for you help on this. Matt

I'm 53 yrs young & i do not claim to know it all,but i have used ivemec for yrs & i start when the are about 4 months old & give them 1/2 cc by mouth orally. mixed with cool aid or just plain water.Whether they are 30 po or 75 po i still give 1/2 cc never had a heart worm case in my life time.I use a 3cc syringe that makes it about right for them that ivemic is bad tasting stuff thats the reason for the cool aid.Hope this helps you.

Matt, I use the 1% sterile solution for cattle and swine. I give all my dogs 4/10th's of a cc. My vet said that a 50 to 100 lb dog only needs .272ml (3/10th's), but 1/10th per 10lbs is fine. Do that on the first and the following week a "turn" of safeguard or strongid... which I rotate monthly. Been working fine for six years on my older dogs.
Also, I mix the ivermectin with water in a small syringe, like Grifdog said, and squirt it down their throat. They don't like the taste.
