... ahh yes... there is no greater smell than that of cured meat and tobacco... I remember it well from my youth...
Half of my family was from Ohio... I used to visit when I was a kid... my family there are all farmers, some of which are fantastic artifact collectors. I remember every time they would turn over a field, we would go out after a rain to look for artifacts. I imagine he is dead now... as I remember my grandfather trying to introduce me to his brother when I was very young... He was a recluse that collected all things of this sort and my grandfather saw me as someone that this man might relate to... I can barely remember now, but the volume of natural wonders that this man had on his place was incredible.
... he was a distant fellow, seemed to be suspect of even my grandfather's intentions... but after they talked about how much my grandfather thought I and his brother were alike, he agreed to take us out to one of his fields for a walk...
... I remember seeing thousands of small, inch long, white/clay pipe chards... only occasionally finding a stumped off bowl here and there... apparantly, the farmers throughout the generations had taken a liking to the tobacco... still unclear as to how the volume of debris made it all over the field, however, I was told that while smoking from the long/slender clay pipes, the men would "snap" pieces off before handing it to the next person... not sure how accurate this is, but have also heard stories of "smoke houses" where it was similar practice to do the same.... as for how they became spread all over creation... I imagine the farmers of the time used the pipes as they worked the fields... it is an interesting story to me...
