I have a mnt cur gyp that jus had pups two months back and isn't hunting at night as well as she did before my lead gyp died. I also have a awesome redtick male that is jam up in daylight and silent until looking at a hog but at night he is silent until he gets on a hot track. The gyp hunts great with the male at night but wants to stay close without him. I've put a lot of time in these dogs at night but I think I'm gunna have to start taking them during the day to help them with what they are good at. Wut do y'all think?

try hunting them in the evening leading up to dark, put em on the ground before dark then continue hunting after dark, may help em a bit, just a thought.

Ok I'll try that. Only reason we hunt at night a lot is the hogs come out of the deep thickets more. The gyp is a great help dog but she needs to start striking out. She a mnt cur so I have to use a light hand with her. Can't even scold her or she thinks the world is gunna end Undecided

I got a one eyed dog an ever since he lost his eye he doesn't hunt as good at night but in the day time he might make a mile circle but at night he may only hunt out 50 yards ,
I have also seen dogs that like hunting in the day time better just like people
I personally catch more hogs in the day time

I think I'll jus start hunting early mornings a lot more and try to catch the pigs before they head back to the thickets. Jus Wierd that my redtick will be silent in daylight but opens on a hit track at night. That's the only drawback he has.

The opening won't bother nothing believe me my Redtick opens night or day an bays hogs no problem , some 300 yard runs an some miles all depend on the hog

That's wut I was thinking. I jus can't justify selling him when he does suck a good job. Smart on big hogs and catches under 150. Only hunted him once or twice in the daylight, think ima help him out and run him in the morning for a while and see how he likes the change.

This is a subject that has came up alot in our circle. Have witnessed dogs that hunted like champs in the daylight only to be branded culls at night.

Our reckoning on it is perty basic. Feel that some dogs just have a better viewing perception at night than others.

Witnessed some that just booger bark at shadows. Just appear to have no clear night vision.

The other part we pondered is the different atmosphere that they are accustomed to and are comfortable in hunting. As everyone knows sounds,  smells, humidity, and sight perception are all slightly different from night to daytime.

Just a couple thoughts we have rolled around.

I wish I could hunt year round in daylight sure makes it better for me. During summer just don't have that option. I have seen a few dogs that would booger bark at night but never do it during the day tho.

Well I can say this on this subject... I've had a few dogs that just wouldn't hunt at night, but did really well durring the day. Then there are dogs that hunt both... But when I got my Fred dog from Jimmy, he told me that Fred wouldn't hunt too good at night. I was like hmmmmmm... don't know about paying what I did for a dog that doesn't hunt at night. Well, I started going out with him at night, and yeah, at first there was definitely a line drawn... but after about 2-3 hunts at night he started to realize that it's all the same. Now I think he almost hunts better at night cause it stays cool and he gets gone! LOL! Some dogs just won't do it, but some with time will do whatever needs to be done... IMO.  Grin

Good post I now have the perfect excuse to not nite hunt.  My dogs are afraid of the dark!    But then again it may be that they have a deal with bigfoot and let him have the nite!
