I want to know who is in this for the dogs? and who is in this for the hunt and kill/tie/money?

I'm personally in it for the dogs. I love to see a good dog working a hog and putting pork at the end of a race/track. I love to see puppies start figuring it out and turning it on. I look forward to passing what I know and love on to my kiddo, and seeing what else she has to bring to the table. Although it was fun, awesome, and a rush to be able to take a hog with a knife or tie one up alive, that's not why I started doing it. I started getting hunting dogs because I love dogs, and love to see them do what they were bred to do. I've always had dogs and been a dog lover, but hunting bred dogs take it to a new level. AND if you're in this game/sport/life style for the money, well, you've got it all wrong cause IMO it cost more to play that it pays; unless you've got the pieces of land to be able to host some guided hunts cause then you might be able to make some dog food money.  Wink

Lets hear it folks, why do you do the do?   Afro

With you 100% Ryan.

It's a rush for me when my dogs strike....but not because I may have a chance to catch a pig....it's  because they are puppies and I'm seeing then improve from hunt to hunt.

I expect it will always be that way...even when my pups turn to seasoned dogs. It will be a rush just hearing them work....seeing them....always hoping the best for them.

I get SO MUCH satisfaction seeing a pup turn on. It's the reason I hunt.

Same here, Hell Mr. Montys' tourny comin up is only the second one I will have ever hunted in over 10 yrs hunting. Before I started hog doggin I trained bird dogs exclusively, there is nothing more rewarding than the sense of satisfaction I get watching a young dog I have trained retrieve its first bird or find and bay its first hog. I love working/training and hunting with dogs, if I was ever financially stable enough and in the position  to do it I would do nothing but train bird/blood trailing and hog dogs for the rest of my days........maybe one day!

I got a two fold answer to this....
1)I will say I'm in it for the dogs more than the pork. Since I am a rookie, I'm thinkin to get started is a big dollar sign. Just for me to get set up as a beginner is lookin like a couple grand EASY, (in the first year). Thats a lot of groceries. I repeat-A LOT OF GROCERIES!    I would be lying if I said I was doing it for meat. I might figure out how to make it pay for itself in a few years Undecided

2)I am getting a couple good pups turned on (luvin every bit of it) and learning from hunting buddies/this forum VERY valuable info...I definetly am gettin hooked on it for the love of workin dogs that WANT to hunt. I enjoy watchin them do what they are bred for.  PLUS-IMO,huntin in this type of way puts the test to true friends, character, patience, and trust- in many ways!(which is what mainly counts!)

The reward of this sport comes in many shapes and sizes. My 2 cents

I think the dogs are a good reason for me to get out in the woods and out of the house and spend time with some buddies I like watching the pups do better every time we go out

I enjoy simply watching the dogs work. Seeing the dogs get out there and do naturally what they were bred to do. Nothing comes close to that, in my opinion. I don't even care most of the time if we catch anything, as long as myself and the dogs enjoyed themselves.

I get the most satisfaction from watching the dogs work and watching young dogs come into their own.

I love watching the dogs work a group or 1. I'd watch a good group of dogs bay in the woods all day if it was possible.

Something like this

With me it depends on where I hunt. I always have enjoyed running dogs regardless of deer or hog. I enjoy watching my labs work in the duck hole also. When I hunt another mans place it's more so to see the dogs work than anything. I don't care to much if the pig dies at the end or not. On stuff I have permission to hunt myself I like to watch the dogs work but I like to watch the pigs die also. In these places it's revenge for the money the suckers have cost me.

God almighty it isn't cheap, and I honestly don't know where I've gotten the money to get to where I'm at... and I've only been at it about 3 years. I luckly found the right people to talk to, had a "brother" to me show me the ropes and guide me through the tough parts, and learned some very hard lessons about peoples' character along the way. The cost doesn't go away, and the "want to" keeps getting stronger. Good luck on making it pay for itself becacuse as they say, you have to pay to play. It's tough work to be able to take enough out alive and sell to even cut even or for that matter come out ahead. I personally am not there yet. What we worked hard on and still are is the pieces of land we can hunt on. Once you have some good spots and understanding landowners, then you can start to try and make some money off live hogs or guided hunts. Like I said though, it's tough work. Good luck to you because I know what is ahead. LOL!  Wink

And guys and gals, it's good to see I'm not the only one that is in it for the dogs... the hogs are a plus, a big plus, but still non-the-less a plus.

Without the dogs it would be a useless as far as am concerened.  I myself am all about the dogs .  Anybody can shoot a wild hog but how many can really get the most out of a dog ?

and Jimmy, you hit the nail on the head! If it weren't for them we would just be like the rest and trap and shoot... and what fun is that??? LOL!

And Monty, you're right as rain as well. Not only do the pups learn from you, but you from them. They also learn from the big dogs, and like wise for ourselves from them. It's all a big circle IMO... everyone has something to bring to the table.

I'm glad that people started chiming in on this cause I was begining to think that there is just a bunch of blood thirsty crazies out there! LMAO!  Cheesy Wink Grin

I love it when the dogs first get dropped and they all bail out of the truck 100mph!!! You can tell right then they 100% love it. I have had multiple people recently comment (surprisingly) on how excited the dogs are, and how happy they are hunting. And of course the first bark of the night!!! Not knowing what is on the other end, but hearing that bark that breaks the silent is a drug that no man can ever make!!! The rush I get is amazing!

I do it for my dogs...they love their job. Caint even load one dog up because they all start going crazy ready to go hunt.  I like being out in the woods as well. When I first started hunting their would be times when I would go months with out even catching anything but I still went because I knew my dogs were just starting out and they were still pups. Now I catch hogs just about every time I go.
