Hello everyone! I'm Maegan and I just started to get interested in hog hunting. I Have a blackmouth cur (well, I think that's what he is) and I want to start getting him to learn how to hunt hogs. He's about 1 yrs old, and he's got a lot of energy! Here's some pics below. He was raised as an inside dog, but he loves to follow scents, and tree squirrels and cats. Do you have any suggestions? Thanks!

Nice looking dog, just put as many hogs in front of him as possible and he'll take care of the rest...

DO U NO ANYBODY WITH A BAY PEN IF SO TAKE HIM AND PUT HIM IN IT AND SEE IF HE WILL BARK AT A HOG. AND IF HE DOESNT THE FIRST TIME DONT GET DISCOURAGED SOME DOGS DONT START THE FIRST TIME THERE IN A PEN.  KEEP WORKING HIM AND SCENT TRAILING IS A DIFFERENT STORY JUST TRY HIM IN A PEN FIRST AND WORK ON THE HARDER STUFF LATER

You said he was raised as an inside dog, like a pet.  I am a big promoter and recruiter for the sport of hog hunting. I love it and take great pride in my dogs.  I do not want to discourage you, but you have to always remember that he runs the risk of being hurt, cut or at worst killed.  As long as you can except that, you will do just fine.

as a-k hunter said, make sure you are prepared to lose a family pet if thats all he is at this point. I had a buddy lose his pet the other day to a pig and hes fine but his wife and kids wanna hang him for taking the dog hunting. sad story for the kids.

I would suggest trying him in a bay pen of coarse, if he dont have interest dont try to force him. If he dont work out on a pig , just put him back in the house where he was and grab ya a couple early started hog dogs. if you decide you need any let me know. ganna have a couple up for sale here real quik.

Maegan,
Welcome to our world of chasing hogs. I just wanted you to realize a good squirrel dog is hard to beat. After looking at the picture of your dog, it looks like he is a family member. Squirrels are a lot safer and easier on your hunting dog. I am training a good YBM pup "BOB" to tree squirrels because he will never hunt hogs per my wife and sons. Do not get me wrong we love our hunting dogs very much, but my neighbors often state that I should have been a vet. Getting a hunting dog or dogs will spice up anyone's life no doubt. Good Luck.....

yeah i was gonna suggest the same thing, if he is already showing intrest in treeing id turn him in that direction, especially if he is a family pet. There is some forums for squirrel and coon hunters that could point you in the direction of how to start training him. I've made the mistake of using a family pet as a hunting dog and it sucks when he has gotten cut up.

If your really set on making a hog dog out of him, like the others said, put him in a baypen if you have access to one, if not, take him hunting with other people you might know that hunt, he'll either catch on or he wont.

damn good looking dog btw, has that darker "junkyard" dog look that I love. looks like he could get the job done in whichever sport you get him into.
