Leopard dogs??

I thought leopard was just the color of the dog? I was told it is a breed. Can someone explain how there are lep cats and black and tan cats? What's the difference?

But the Leopard Hound is a totally different breed.

The leopard cat is the same dog as the solid cat or brindle cat just different color variations.

I believe the Catahoula was originally brought to the US by the Spaniards; with most of them being "leopard color".  I know some articles say the Catahoula was a dog from the original Indian tribes.  I also think the Leopard Hound came from the original stock of spanish leopard dogs (what we call catahoulas).  As we know it now, the Catahoula was based out of Louisiana, but I think these dogs came west from FL.  I also believe most of the original true FL Curs were from the spanish catahoula dogs.

for many years the leopard hound was known as the leopard cur but the name was changed so they could compete in the hound groups...I believe "Underdog" on this forum mentioned it before...

The leopard cur/hound is kind of like a mt cur...they were bred strictly for hunting and the best I can describe them is that they are somewhere between cur dogs and hounds...quite a few are semi silent to open on track...this is about my favorite type of hunting dog...lots of hunt and plenty of nose...

American Leopard Curs/Hounds are closely related to Cats, but different in a lot of ways. They are more scent dogs while cats are more sight dogs. Leopards tree their game while cats catch and bay most of their game. They have more ear than cats. Double coated like cats, many colors like cats. The same problems from merle to merle breeding ( deafness and blindness). Here are a few pics of my American Leopard curs/hounds. Oh they became HOUNDS in 2008 by UKC. The original registry still has them as curs. Thats the ALCBA. Funny thing is that if you have a leopard cur with ALCBA papers you can have him registered as a UKC American leopard hound. So they are curs, just hounds on papers... They took the ALBA breed standards.  You cant register an American leopard cur thats more that 1/3 white.  We really watch for Albino traits and they are disqualifying traits.  I have a litter 7 weeks old now out of Bubby and Ramrod. Sorry but I dont have any to sale.
