If you purchase a gun second hand, is there anyway to check an see if it was stolen?

Know any cops personally? Another option I believe would be a gun shop. I believe they have a way to check and see if a gun is stolen. If it comes up so be prepared to lose it. Just a chance u have to take in order to be sure.
