The Animal Research Foundation (ARF) was organized from the English Shepherd Club of America (ESCOA), which had its roots on the Stodghill Ranch, located near Quinlan, Texas.
In 1947, Tom D. Stodghill began keeping records of his English Shepherds that his great-grandparents brought to America in the late 1700's, and from that humble beginning he set up the Animal Research Foundation to help in the systematic breeding of working stockdogs.
V.T. Williams of Thornton, Texas, was the first man to request registration for the Catahoula cowdog, and the first ARF-Registered Catahoula was registered on its merits, by style of work and general appearance, on September 30, 1951.
Catahoulas are now found in many parts of the world -- they are working cattle in Alaska, Canada, Hawaii, Venezuela, etc. They have been used in working sheep, and with cutting horse trainers as "turn-back dogs". Catahoulas appeared in the movie "Home From The Hills", starring Robert Mitchum. Catahoulas continue to demonstrate their versatility as "drug sniffing dogs", as sled dogs, rodeo clowns use them to protect the cowboy from bucking bulls, and for hunting and guard and protection duty. The Catahoula has become one of the leading breeds of stock dogs used throughout
the world.
Mr. Tom D. Stodghill was the first to write the history of the Catahoula Leopard Cowdog in 1983, entitled "History Of Catahoula Leopard Cowdogs". The American Kennel Club (AKC) purchased his book March 20, 1984, for their library. We urge every Catahoula Leopard enthusiast to obtain this
ook for your library collection as well.
The Animal Research Foundation was prominent in the establishment of "The National Association of Louisiana Catahoulas" (NALC), which occurred on October 10, 1977. Prior to that date, January 2, 1971, through May 18, 1977,
the Animal Research Foundation (ARF) registered 479 Catahoulas for Mr. Kline Rushing (Tophand Kennels) and Mrs. J.S. Eaves who founded NALC, and their customers.
All NALC, ACBA, NKC Catahoulas are registerable with
the Animal Research Foundation. Catahoulas that have not been pedigreed or registered are still registerable through the ARF "Merit Registration" program (applications are available upon request).
